Angry Help me choose number 6

On Saturday I was heading to DC for a job and my SVX started making a grinding noise. I got of the highway as the noise was getting worse. As I pulled into a parking lot, I think I have it ID'd as a bad front diff... Call AAA, get towed to Cressona home and jump in the Legacy.

I came down to Cressona to vote today and verified that yes, the front diff is phuked. For the new folks here is my tranny history.

Nov 2003 - Buy car with suspect trans, hope to get 6-12 months of decent shifting.
Dec 2003 - Trans dies, Have local shop put in a SOA rebuild.
Feb 2004 - SOA rebuild dies, local dealer puts in another SOA rebuild under warranty
Summer 2005 - 2nd SOA rebuild dies, out of warranty. Put in a stock from the junkyard.
Summer 2006 - Trans dies, install another stock from a parts car. Also add external filter.
Summer 2006 +2 days - Realize that I plumbed the external filter backwards as I toast another. Install a SOA rebuild pulled out of the junkyard.

As you can see I really like the stock gearing, so don't recommend a 4.44. My thoughts are;
1 - Stock gearing LAN rebuild - $2,000 to $4,000. Should be the last transmission I put into it.
2 - Pull trans and swap a new front diff - $200.00. I have a diff in the basement, and the trans seems to be shifting great.
3 - 5 spd WRX trans - $1,500 to $2,000. I've driven a few 5/6 spd SVX's and while I agree that it does turn it into a different car. I'm not sure if I like that car better???
4 - 5 spd 4.11 trans I have in my basement. - Under $1,000. I seem to recall someone mentioning about using a higher 5th gear in these transmissions to give a better highway cruising speed?? Any more info on this???

Re: Help me choose number 6

If you know what the 4.11 was from, and know the gear ratios, you can calculate your crusing rpm pretty easily...

IMO, most people get too caught up on the whole "shorter gearing will ruin your cruising milage" thing.

a shorter gear increases the torque you put to the ground (on an rpm basis). you need the same amount of torque to maintain the same speed regardless of your rpm. what changes is your engine load. So, although you will be at a higher rpm, the load on your engine will be less to create the same amount of torque.

Now i know this may not be the same for every car/engine or manual vs automatic, but when i swapped the 5mt in my integra to one with shorter gearing, my mpg was completly uneffected. btw my rpm at 60mph jumped from 3000 to 3400.

Re: Help me choose number 6

I'd play odds on the 4.11 being around 3400RPM at 75mph on stock sized tires. A 5th gear a little taller would be pretty sweet, but worth the while?

Re: Help me choose number 6

I voted (second time today ) for the 4:11 5-speed (hey you KNEW I would) you've got it there, so might as well use it or the front diff you already have....(I could use that 4:11 5-speed if you don't )

If the 5-speed is out of a Plain Legacy or Impreza, it should have the higher 5th gear....the GT's Outback's, and RS, and BAJA all run the lower 5th gear

Re: Help me choose number 6

What no level 10 rebuild on the list? My thinking would be the LAN rebuild BUT the problem with the front dif isn't resolved in those or is it. Let me know when you're ready to put it in. I don't get enough wrenching with my British cars. Hopefully it'll be a nice 25 degree day with sleet falling. There is no better time to lie on your stones than that.

How much do you like the stock gearing?

Re: Help me choose number 6

Stat, it's not the mileage I'm concerned with. It's the cruising RPM's. I like my Legacy more with the 5 spd, except for the higher cruising RPM's than what the 4EAT gave it. I'm constantly reaching down to shift it into the next gear, only to realize that I'm maxed out.

The 4.11 I have is out of a Foz. I looked it up in the chart and I think Rob has it pretty close.

The other Pro for the 4.11 I have is that it is a hyd clutch, so it would be a fairly easy swap with a WRX with the better gearing down the road.

Ben, go fix the antenna on your Jag.

Re: Help me choose number 6

Dave, it comes down to this... The trans in the car has lasted 4times longer than any of the others... Do you want to change it? I can send you a step-by-step procedure on how to setup the front diff and you know the basics of how the bolts come off and get put back on... Let me know, I can also give a hand if you want me to swing out on a weekend... 5mt is gonna require all the fab work to be done for the pedals, linkage, X-member, driveshaft, etc also buying new clutch and flywheel, starter.. eh its a PITA especially if you are not sold on converting... Either way, let me know buddy

... and while I have it all apart, I might as well do the valve body?

Re: Help me choose number 6

I vote for new diff, valve body and tcu. The extra rpms in my 5 speed don't necessarily annoy me, but more along the fact that I think I'm getting old and want a quieter cruise again.

What he said.

Would be nice if you could put in Subaru's new CVT.

Re: Help me choose number 6

I was there for 2 of those trans. swaps

if you figure out how to do the 5 speed 5th gear change please let me know as I wish I could do this to the Baja.

I say put in parts you have (keep it on the cheap) and do the diff swap.

And like Ben said: Wait till it is 25 degrees and call us and we can come help you out.

Re: Help me choose number 6

FWIW, my Pearly with the 2.5RS trans got 17/25mpg, driven in a spirited fashion, in short trips to work, and cruising around 75. Not bad!

The Silver? I guess you could say I sell my soul at the gas pump.
