How much unequal tire wear between wheels
Hi All,
Daughter hit a curb, took out sidewall on 92. Sears provided brand new Falken 512 tire. BUT, tires had 6k on them, old tire had 1/16" wear (.062") compared to new. Will this burn out tranny/diff? TIA, Gordon

Allowable tire wear
From what I have read, Subaru says that all tires must be within 1/4 inch of each other. With only 1/16 of wear I think it is likely OK. You need to physically measure the outside circumfrence though to see the difference. Measure with the vehicle jacked up or wheel removed, also check the tire pressure, as this will vary the measurement.

I would say that there would be problems with up to 1/4" wear. I would also measure from the ground to the top of the wheel and make all tires the same. There has been quite a few threads discussing this topic and that is one of the ways to make the rolling diameter the same.

Easy way to measure: Mark each tire sidewall directly above the ground (6:00) and roll the car forward until one mark is back at 6:00. Then check the position of the remaining tires.
Give your most difficult job to the laziest person and he'll find the easiest way to do it.

With the new tire, i would put in the back, the cars are dominantly fwd when awd is not engaged.

New tires and I hit a giant pot-hole in scranton, all my change fell out.
had to replace the front passenger. They probably had 4K of wear on them, but it was replaced about 18 months ago and no problems since. I cringe when I go under that bridge still. |

excuse my ignorance guys, but worn tires can really f**k some important parts up ?
Mine are totally shot yet I toughed them all winter..I thought it was more of a security thing than anything else..because of the all wheel drive, I've managed my way around pretty good in the winter here.. so you guys would suggest about changing my tires to preserve the transmission ? |
