HVAC Filter Change?

hi all,

i am wondering if anyone here has changed the filter for the HVAC, and if so, where does it go, and how much, etc.

the reason i feel i need one is everytime i put on the vents my allergies go crazy, and there is a certain funk to the air coming out. i always remembered seeing the littel displays at kragen at the parts counter telling you how great it is to replace it, etc.

so if anyone has any info, that would be fantastic.

thanks a bunch
jj

Talking Smelly HVAC?

Hi Intellibomb,

I used to work for a Toyota dealership as a Service Writer. In the summer, when people are using their A/C is when we would have trouble with smelly ventilation systems. There are two things we would do, and either one or both may work for you.

1. There is a product called "Frigifresh" we would spray into the inlet ducts. This is just a deodorizer and does not get rid of the root cause, it just masks the problem.

2. Make sure that you are letting your A/C cycle properly. Typically when people have this problem they are cranking the temp control to max cold (all the way over into the blue area) and turning down the blower when it starts getting too cold. The problem with this is that the receiver/dryer stays too wet and allows bacteria to develop and what you are smelling is the metabolic waste products of the new wild life living in your A/C. Instead, turn the temp control closer to the mid range and adjust your blower to give you more cool air. This allows the receiver/dryer to dry out and kill the little F***ers before they start to go wee wee in your system.

Hope this helps,
Russ.

Item #16 in the JDM accessories catalog is an SVX air filtration system. Who knows what #17 is? http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/svxcess/246.jpg

This is the latest information I got from Subaru Japan/Japan Direct Import Service: Evidentally, these accessories were designed for the JDM market as it seems that the Japanese are very heavy smokers

No. 16 is a cabin air cleaner/purifier system. It is hard-wired into the 12V electrical system and works in conjunction with the climate control system. They said it was not too hard to install and would send me translated instructions, if needed.

Cabin Air Cleaner (No. 16)...43,900JPY ($375.00US)
"Catalogue says that this cleaner works by the electrical power of car battery. The cabin air cleaner circulates air in the cabin by electrical power of car battery, and cleans dust and odors through a filter in it. This cleaner is controlled by a switch that is installed around driver's seat. it starts working for 5 minutes with Hi-mode linking with the air conditioner; then it is changed to Low-mode automatically. Installation manual is also included in the box, and we heard from Subaru that you can install it easily. (I will translate the manual for you if you purchase this item.)"

No. 17 is a smaller, less powerful version of No. 16. It is solar powered and can be used on the dash or the rear deck, or both.

Details of Solar Cleaner (No. 17)...5500JPY ($47.00US)
"The catalogue says that the fan for this cleaner works by "solar electrical power", and removes odors from the cabin. After that, the good and light smell of jasmine remains. You should think this equipment as an aromatic.

Actually, this equipment has a solar battery in it, and a fan works without any sources of power. But it works only for an aromatic, and doesn't work for the cleaning of air in the cabin. Also, liquid in it has to be purchased once it runs short. You can install this anywhere you prefer because this equipment is fixed by double-sided tape."

I didn't want to spill the beans. I had a feeling that would go for a good penny, I put down a bid but that is too much for a toy that I wouldn't use to often.
