Lee,
Great meeting you yesterday. Just wish you had had your SVX And yep, we have a great deal of fun at these autocrosses with the Mercedes Club. There is a super bunch of guys and gals that run, and I bet you were amazed (as I have been) re how well the Mercedes run - especially the old ones as big as a BOAT! And of course, there's the E55 - this is a sedan with 469 HP - wicked fast! But glad you could come out and join us. Sorry I was unable to spend more time with you. Like Rufus, I was kind of busy doing tech inspections and instructing some of the new guys.

BTW, Mike (in his 911) beat me in raw time- his 37.69 sec to my 37.89 sec. Of course, he runs in "B" Stock and the SVX runs in "G" stock. But Mike did a superb job running the car for the first time. He has only had it since Dec 03. A sweet machine, that 1974 911! Beautiful shape too. And Ron, for his first autocross ever, also did really well - Ron, I think you did finally beat that Mercedes desiel, didn't you?
And Bill, in his black SVX! He had me beat until the afternoon. Boy has he improved! Nip and tuck (sorry for the pun) now!

CHIKETKD,
Check out the Mercedes web site at >www.gws-mbca.org< and click on "autocross" in the top left menue to check out the results for the last few seasons. The SVX holds its own against the competition. Keep in mind that the club used the SCCA index'ing system in comparing the cars' times.
You's have to come out and join us. Be sure to get there early, because all of the slots for the season are now taken, and for the no shows, that opens slots up on a first come, first served basis.
Later,
Harry

I was helped out a bit by the "broadside" technique the RX8 used to mangle cones in the finish lane, but I'll accept ugly wins.

Thanks for the encouragement, Chike.

Ron.

Harry,

Thanks for the invite! I definitely will sometime this summer. I just need to complete a few things on my SVX before I can take her out on the track or AutoX course. I'm thinking I'll need a tranny cooler, 4EAT shift kit, performance pads and maybe a switch to synthetic fluid in my tranny.

Once those baseline mods are complete, I'll be ready to take 'er out!

Chike,
I would NOT advise going to the synthetic fluid for your trans. SVXRIDE (Bill) did, and the trans developed pretty sever leaks past the seals as a result. I have run the standard fluid and had no problem at all - even running laps at Summit Point and VIR, not to speak of autocross (I am now knocking on wood, big time . All the other things you mention are good upgrades.

BTW, we have not nailed it down yet in final, but it apprears we will also be running autocross at the Sherando High School as well as the WSSC in Silver Spring, MD. It's omly anout two miles or so from Interstate 81 - and four miles from where I live in Stephens City / Winchester, VA. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from you. And it you are up this way, let me know and stop by to say hello.

Later,
Harry

Hey Harry,

Are you good at working on SVX's? If so, maybe I could order some parts and drive up to your neck-o-the-woods and we could spend a day working on both cars (if you have anything that you'd like to add/remove from yours).

It could be a 'Mod Day'! Maybe some other SVX'ers in the area may want to come by...

Let me know if this could work. Doesn't have to be anytime soon...

I mean if we got tire shine products, we gotta' be able to develop some concoction that temporarily softens tread rubber. Lee & Bill, get those NASA chemists busy on this project. Teflon is sooo yesterday.

Thanks, Ron (also too lazy to change tires).

They use Kerosene on my cousins racing go-cart to soften the tires.

Re: Re: Re: Ron the Cone Head

An older gentleman in my office who's been in drag racing since the 60's, said they used to use bleach to soften the tires back then... (He worked at EnglishTown Dragway in NJ for over 20 years)

Sounds like a 50/50 kerosene/bleach mix oughta' do the trick!
I hope I can stay in G stock, though.

Ron (better swerving through chemistry).

FYI -
Harry's mentoring is a major reason for my improvement. Everyone in the MBCA AutoX community is really helpful. In addition to running tech and generally keeping us in line , Harry volunteered to ride with me on my first run and provide advice as to how to drive the course.
It was something to watch several members working to improvise a curbside toe adjustment on a VW Golf (?) who had the misfortune to smack the curb near one of the last cones and put a serious hurt on his driver's side rear tire.

That's the best thing about AutoX events...the curb-side mechanics!

Thumbs up

I have posted a low-res version of one of the videos in my locker if anyone would like to see it. It is in the folder called, strangely enough, autoX video.

OK, there is a really low res copy that is pretty bad, and a medium one that looks decent. They are 2 and 5 MBs respectively. Both are .wmv (windows media video)

Feedback please

Harry-

Did you look up those times you mentioned in your earlier post, or was that just from memory?

I was certain that my time called on the final run was 37.3 but perhaps I was mistaken...

PS: the run in the video was the third practice run in the morning, just before the battery died...

Wow! Only 37 seconds to get a female to cross the line.
Probably the best first date ever for both of you.
Nice work, Mike, on both the car & the cutie.

Ron (44 seconds).
