Check Engine Codes on a '96

My check engine light came on about a week ago so I thought I would check the codes using the usual procedure. Wrong
The black diagnosis connector on a 96, or at least on mine does not have a wire going to the #2 terminal so of course the blue pins don't reveal anything.
So I'm wondering if anyone here has successfully pulled the codes on a 96 (or 97) and how did you do it.
The later models of the SVX had a diagnosis terminal on the dash where the coin holder is on earlier years and maybe this replaced that function.
