ummmm
I don't know yet but I will soon when I take the heads off of one of my motors. If the question isn't answered by then, I'll let you know.

Semantics?
The cylinders are joined in the centers between the bores and to both ends of the block. However the top and bottom of the cylinder is completely open. I'd call it an open deck. I'll post a pic from an open block when I get back home.

Open deck
so says the FSM (love those books!)
"The cylinder block is made from aluminum diecast. The cylinder perimeter has an open-deck design which is lightweight, highly rigid, and has superb cooling efficiency."

As promised, here's a picture of the deck of an extra block I have. You decide what you want to call it. I'd call it open. More in my locker. Todd

Yep, SVX is open deck... nice pic.
To the original poster... why does it matter? Are you doing a forced induction project? The block should be stable to about the 12psi level without any changes... when you start pushing higher boost levels through 10:1CR things start to get wonky... but you should be fine at any boost level up to "HOLY CRAP THAT'S FAST" level without needing to have the deck closed or the block built up. |

I came across the terms "open deck" and "closed deck" reading an article on turbocharging Subaru engines, and it's still not clear to me what they mean.
Can anyone here provide an explanation comprehensible to a semi-literate person (that would be me)?
