Point taken, too bad they are ending sales in the US before they have the chance to iron out the problems for a new batch in Europe. But potential maintenance aside, Phaeton are shaping up to be a great deal on Ebay.

i'm sure there are people with VW's that don't have any problems, but IMHO, its not worth the risk (especially for a $70,000 Phaeton).

another VW story: my friend's wife HAD to have a Beetle. she loved them, blah blah blah. he broke down and bought her one. she sold it three months later.....she ended up HATING that car and all the trips to the dealer/gremlins. i still harass her about it from time to time.

don't even get me started on VW's power windows and how they like to break and cost mega $$$$$$. Back when I bought my tdi passat (gone now thank god) the car broke its PW motor the second day I had it. of course it was a rear window and driving with only one rear window down makes an awfully painful wind noise.

Loved the mileage....hated the electronics.

Ok so now that is out of the way, what do people think of the auto transmissions that can come in BMWs? I'm sorry for hijacking the thread but at least I am asking something that is somewhat more on topic now.

I have never had a BMW with an auto, my drivers have always been 4 or 5 speeds, so sorry, I can't help you on that.

Most (if not all) BMW auto trannies in the 90s were GM transmissions. So they are not highly regarded. Not sure about what is in the current models.

The problem I have with ODBII BMWs is that they ditched the LSD option for all models other than the M-cars. In 1996 they made traction control standard on most models and that replaced the LSD. In my opinion that is a poor substitute. I love the fact that just about every Subie has LSD as an option even if it is available only on the top of the line trim package. At least it is offered. I had the gf get a Forester S model back in 2000 as the L model did not have LSD. So a tip of the hat to Subaru and a wag of the finger to BMW.

I thought BMW had transitioned to ZF autos by the late '90s, I have a '92 GM hydromatic or 2 from 325is' (plural)

I should have used two lines for my first comment (#2). The 760iL is a V-12. I drove a 2001 I-6 530i and loved how smooth it was. The only 12 I have driven so far was a 1993 Mercedes-Benz SL600.

The dealer who lent me the 928 S for Reading, has a few nice BMWs, including 2 M3s, but we are a bit far from Kalifornia.

Drool

The budget isn't open to an M3 just yet, but I could really use a Cabriolet at some point in the not too distant future, better get the house done and garage open first
