"circ" button

I've noticed this summer, that my re-circulation button turns itself off every 15 minutes or so. It's only mildly annoying, but is this normal? Waht could be causing it?

This is perfectly normal. Some Subarus will let you recirculate the interior air for as long as you want. Some will automatically turn off recirc after 10 or 15 minutes. This is to prevent bacteria from forming in your air vents and causing a nasty smell. Why some models do this and others do not is a mystery to me.

Actually, it's to reduce the chances of CO poisioning. Many newer vehicles will have this "feature", but I'm not sure whether this is due to a federal mandate or not.

My observation is this happens to most cars equipped with Auto Climate Control. Some say it controls the humidity....one thing driving the SVX
is especially in winter, the windows won't easily get fogged up..

Mine does this all the time. When it turns off, I turn on and on again.
(I need stronger wind from the blower)

Significant Technical Input
Actually it began many years ago as a safety feature on cars with climate control (no easy way to implement it on manual systems.) The theory is that prolonged recirculation can cause O2 depletion in the cab and cause the operator to become drowsy.

You should just rebuild/replace the fan motor then.

It may be enough just to clean the brushes and dust out of it and add a little light oil to the bushings at the ends of the spindle. My blower motor started making an intermittent squealing noise about 5 or 6 years back and would sometimes slow down or even stop at the lowest speed. I took it apart, cleaned and oiled it and it has been working fine ever since.

My bad. I didn't write it clearly.

I meant my "circulation" will turn off all times and I just turned it back on and on. I needed stronger AC wind from the blower especially in the SUMMER. Did you feel/notice that when we turned on the "circulation" button no matter at LO, MI, HI speed ....you'll feel that the wind is maybe 5% stronger??

For 92@almost 70K, my blower motor works as new. Always quiet and smooth even in the really cold winter. I always try to keep the interior away from dust and I will roll up all windows if I'm going to pass by some construction areas.

I agree with Beav.....feel stuffy if the "cir" is on for a long time. So when I drive cars with no auto climate control...I will recirculate the cabin air myself.

I have never had to use the recirc feature. I always allow it to blow fresh air in. I have tried it just for giggles, but the moisture starts to increase and I switch it off.

Recirc works wonders on really hot days. I'll drive for a minute with the windows down to let out the hot air, then I'll turn on the AC with recirc. Seems to cool the car down faster. It also works great at keeping unwanted smells from entering the car, like exhaust from diesel trucks or the stink from the sewage plant I have to drive by everyday!
