<<'someone' in the store told me that all the batteries are actually from 'three main manufactures.'>>

I don't know if I'd believe them. I know of two factories here in SE Wisconsin that make automotive batteries. I doubt that 2/3 of the batteries are made within 30 miles of each other.

Just my $.02

Have you ever considered writing a book "My bad luck with cars" by RWJ?

Doug
I don't know if they manufacture enough paper, or if there are enough trees to keep up with the supply. It would be several volumes. It could chronical my exploits with my first car (64 Ford Fairlaine) from the time the brakes failed, through an unseated spark plug (not my doing) launched from the engine to put a dent in my hood (from the inside), to the time the recaps decided to disintegrate on a busy street. Or, maybe the Torino I had for six months before cleaning three cows out of a fence row . . . how 'bout the 74, German made Capri that dropped the driveshaft and there was no one in the US who could Ramanufacture it -- So, I had to order one from Germany. Before the order made it to Germany, the warehouse to which the order was being sent, burned down. The order had to come back to the US before it could be re-routed to another German Warehouse. All that's prior to the 80 Capri RS Turbo (can't remember how many times I swapped ends in that sucker), The Peugeot (can you say electrical difficulties?), the Triumph Spitfire (with phantom fuel cut-off problem which turned out to be a float anomoly), to my last car prior to the SVX, 89 Suzuki Sidekick that ate a bearing in it's first month of my ownership and had the stereo ripped from the dash only three months after I installed it (by "nice" criminals -- they unzipped the rear window in the convertible top as opposed to SLASHING IT with a knife. I could go on . . . but I won't. Of course, instead of buying the book, you could wait for the movie: "The Fast and the FUBARed."

There are plants all over but it has been my understanding for over thirty years now that there really are only three battery manufacturers. Willard-Exide, Prestolite and hmmmmhmmmhmmm (can't remember *S*.) Who knows now, the way companies are traded back and forth. That's not to say the batteries are all the same, just like the Michelins you buy at Sears are nowhere near the same Michelin you buy anywhere else.

Very good point. Some may buy the top quality, some the "factory seconds", yet others may raid the dumpsters for their line

I'd say it's probably more a result of how much the retailer wants to spend. 'S' would say "We want to sell 800,000 Michelin tires this year but we won't spend more than $12 average cost each - Whaddya got?" Some retailers that would rather provide and be known for better parts might say "We want the best you've got, you get to put your name on it and make yourselves look good, but you're going to give us a price break in return." Thousands of ways to split hairs....
