Question different tires on AWD is okay????

well, this is the story after mandi's birthday.....
the link is as:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...2924#post22924

i took my SVX to local dealer. i asked and showed them my car's tire situations(as described previously). surprisngly, the man told me it'll be fine. as long as all four tires are the same size it'll be fine. he asked, and i replied him that i didn't hear any binding during any turns. he told me that'll be okay.

i've 3 bridgestone RE95 and 1 yoko AVID4. YOOO, different tread life, different brands but same size. they're all 225/50/16 91V.

well, their answers made me not as worry as previously....but, still.... are their answers okay?

different brands, not different sizes?

I'm thinking that the tires, if they're both sets of the same speed rating, shouldn't have enough of a torque difference to cause significant wear to the transfer system. Normally, the issue is with different overall diameters causing the the car to always register different speeds from front to back.

The tires may be the same diam. when both sets are brand new. But different manufacturers use different rubber compounds for their different model and size tires.
The 2 sets of tires may wear differently.
My suggestion is that every time you rotate the tires (~5000 mi.), you also check their diameter. If one set stars wearing out quicker than the other set, move the slow wearing set to the front and keep it there for a longer period. The front is heavier and normally gets 90% of the torque. If you need to do this, you should still check the diameters on a regular basis.

Good Luck.

i like to run identical tires, but my svx has mismatched tires, dunlops on the front, i forget what's on the rear. anyway, i have to confess i think the car handles, runs, etc. fine. i'll just keep an eye on the tread life and eventually get a set that match.

Actually the SVX has a 60/40 front to rear torque split in normal cruising mode. Other Suabarus have a 90/10 ratio same situation (automatic). The 5 speeds have a 50/50 ratio. This is the standard torque split before driving conditions make the system adjust.
