Interchangeability..

Recently I had to order a new CV boot for my SVX. Now I'm looking into changing my rear wheel bearings. I was just curious if I could source parts such as the boots and bearings from an impreza or legacy? The reason for asking is the CV boots for an impreza are about $8 cheaper.

Just get a whole new half shaft from autozone. They're cheap, and htey have a lifetime warranty.

That is the best way to go and the least expensive as well.

I only paid $20 for the boot and bnads. I was just curious for future trips since they might have the Impreza parts instock and I won't have to wait 5 days for a boot that'll take 30 min to install. As for the bearings... just thought it'd be easier to find Impreza or Legacy bearings on Ebay.

Do you have a confirmed part number?

I replaced the boots myself rather then buying new half axles. I once bought 1/2 axles from autozone and they clicked just as bad as the old ones. I will never buy rebuilt ones from them again.

I have since repaired my own joints by buying the CV joint componenets and replacing them. At least this way your sure the job is done right. Only thing is, it's very time consuming and extremely messy. Next time I will probably try and get the half axles from somewhere besides the big chains stores. Cost saving of buying new boots/bands/grease vs. buying new axle is only around 20-30 bucks. Time savings, for someone like me, would have been around 4 hours.

If you end up buying a boot kit or just boots, I highly recommend buying some extra grease from the dealership. This is probably the only thing I'd ever recommend getting from the dealership as their markup on parts is astronomical, sometimes 400%! However, they sell a band/grease kit that comes with lots of grease and both bands for a resonable price.

I can't imagine the impreza boots are much different. Only way to tell is to try and fit them up. You can always return them to the store if they don't work. I like your line of thought. Good luck!

I don't think it's worth swapping out the whole axel for a simple little tear in the boot. I'm not having any issues because of the cut.
