I'm planning to get the car repainted back to it's original 434 pearl color really soon and I want to be sure that it's possible to obtain that OEM pearl from the factory. The white or silver base that you were talking before seems to be one of the complicated and expensive process to get my car like a new one...

Thanks!
DuPont makes varying qualities of paint. Their top one is very good in my opinion. They also have 4 clear coats. They have one which is a premium "Show" product which is very nice.

Well in my opinion PPG has as very good if not the best paint lines I have ever used.I use it all the time at work and we use Deltron 2000 (which is the PPG platnum line...the best). They also have a good variety of powder and liquid pearls. Plus there paints are easily blendable with any color because they have tons of variences of colors (which is different shades of one color) so you can always get the right color. One more thing is PPG paint is lifetime gueranteed by a certified PPG painter.

joes advice is prettymuch spot on. Coming from the guy who was in charge of making sure colors matched, theres nearly an infinint amount of variables that will make a color right, super close, or way off the charts wrong. Ive seen some work done by shops that used some kind of photo-matching system...They apparently se some device to scan a section of the cars paint to match it. the few jobs that ive seen the end results of this on were a flawless match

The (not as new) way is to look up the code in a big fancy computer daata base, and mix up a blend of various colors, pearls, and other effects to get the color specified. Of couse, it worked best to mix a sample and compare it to whats on the car, to tweak it out to compensate for any fading or darkening of the original color over time, OR even a slight variance in the factory color caused by diffrent manufacture locations, dates, or other unknown conditions. Think a factory job is always going to match, and be the same on every car that color? think again. Just have a look at the color difrfrence between a new car's bumpers and its body...

anyhow gloomy, the color could be darker because either, it really is darker(this is where my bet goes, weathr its the paitn mixer's fault or the information from whatever database he retrieved the info from), or also likely is the clear coat is diffrent...often the clearcoats that provide the best uv protection have a yellowish tint...when put over a green it would certianly look much darker. Also, greens tend to fade light over time..possibly the new color is how it REALLY looked 10 year ago?

Euro Sport, one of the premier bodyshops in the Baltimore area, uses this system, a sort of spectrum analyzer, which gave the EXACT color of what was needed, whether the paint was brand new or 5 years old. It is also used for matching custom- blended paint jobs

Don, the owner of Euro Sport, said something like this to me (substituting SVX for Acura)

"Let's say I took a green SVX off of the assembly line at 9am, and an identical one off the assembly line at noon. I park them next to each other and they look identical in every way... Now let's say I swap doors between the two cars. There will be a difference, however slight, and it will show up."

That's why he used this technology as it was a lot less hassle and no returns. He said to me, "I don't care what color the factory says your car is... I care about what color YOUR car is"

Precicely

Anyhow, back on track...in a somewhat appropriate to the whole color matching conversation....an old picture of mine getting taught some new HDR tricks

Old:

New:
(okay, so I went a little overboard on the contrast)

HDR photography is essentially the combining of over exposed and under exposed images to bring out details that would otherwise not be seen in a normal shot. this picture was done in a chearterish way, just adjusting the brightness and crontrast before merging...Actually setting the camera and taking multiple pictures should yield even more remarkable results

That is actually Eric in the corner, and I don't know what he was doing.

It was nice to get into it and drive it somewhere!
