2.5 Legacy Outback
Camshaft timing gears on a 2.5 DOHC.
Can these be removed without the subaru special tool? The bolts are very tight and any more force will break the pully. note: these are composite pullies and I don't want to use any sort of a clamp or risk breaking one.

Thanks but........my 1/2 Ingrasol Rand won't loosen these. I used the old timing belt, clamped it, and a breaker bar w/cheater bar. I leaned on it very hard and it would not break free. any more force is sure to break the pully. I must have an abnormally tight bolt huh? Can't use heat....composite pully.
I even went as far as to look in the service literature to see if this was a left handed bolt which wouldn't make any sense anyway. Depending on the availability of the special tool, I may try your advice anyway. Pullies for those should be a dime a dozen......

Wait a minute.....How do you fit a chain clamp between gears? The clearance is too close! You must be talking about a single ohc

ohhh damn you got a doc! that sucks the fact that your half inch couldnt take it off is a little concerning... the subaru tool wont help. the gears are some what cheep new i think like 50 bucks or something so i would try to heat it... and go from there... why do you need to take it off any way? oh and make (if its on the drivers side) you get the one for the right trannsmition that you have they have diffrent pickup points on the cam sensor

Cam seals leak. Ya the 1/2 inch impact does nothing. If I am very carefull with the heat it might work to heat it without damage.
I wonder if a previous tech used loc-tight? If so heat would do the trick. I can assure you these are tight. I knew I was in trouble when my IR didnt work. Maybe a student turned down the regulator on the air hose? I will check that twm. good night!

got it. I pulled out all the stops. Cranked the regulator all the way up, oiled the gun, heated the bolt and the bolt came out. It seems that a previous tech or back yard mech cross threaded the bolt into the cam. The alignment pin for the cam pully was drove into the cam and chipped part of alignment groove in the cam. There is obvious damage to the bolt and cam.
I found a new pully and bolt for 25 bucks, so the only thing I am out was labor. I think I can put it back together and make it work after I clean up the threads in the cam.
