Thanks to SVXfiles' customers....

Those of you who know me know that I rarely post here anymore (no time) but when I do, it's because I feel the need to express myself. This is one of those times.

First off, I would genuinely like to thank those of you who have formed a working relationship as well as a friendship with Tom (aka OT aka svxfiles). I would especially like to thank those who have tried to help him out in the past, including those who have pre-paid for future services to help him get through this difficult period. Getting injured when you are self-employed is a nightmare, and injuring your HAND when you are a mechanic is worse. I know the reason you guys have done this is because, knowing Tom, you have no doubts that he will honor his commitment to each and every one of you.

That being said, a couple of incidents happened recently that have disturbed me to the point that I need to say something. Those involved will know who they are:

One recent customer (I won't say how recent nor mention any names), after agreeing to Tom's EXTREMELY cut-rate price for service ($100.00 per day vs. the already-reasonable $50.00 an hour) received 4 or 5 (I can't quite remember) full days' service, room & board (as he stayed at Tom's house instead of dropping off the car or gettting a room nearby) a number of free parts, and at least one replacement part under warranty a year after installation (try that at your local garage) and then offered him $200.00 TOTAL - half now and half later. And this was after he showed up a full day late for his appointment, preventing Tom from starting on any other projects that would tie up the lift and/or garage.

The second I just discovered today when I went into the medicine cabinet at Tom's house (which used to also be MY house) to give Tom the left over pain pills that were prescribed for me when I had my wisdom teeth out and found THE EMPTY BOTTLE!!!! Tom didn't even know I had them, so naturally it wasn't him that took them. This bottle was full when I was there the day after the Reading meet.

Talk about kicking a guy when he's down.....

Some days I can't for the life of me understand why Tom insists on doing this for a living, but he loves the car and is damn good at what he does. It's a shame that a couple of low-lifes think it's okay to rip off a guy who would give anybody the shirt off his back.

I am not writing this to evoke sympathy for Tom, just to let you know that they are among us - those who have no respect or decency - and I have become a little more jaded today. And to let those involved in these incidents know it is NOT alright, and Karma is a b!tch.

/end rant/

Di

Re: Thanks to SVXfiles' customers....

I was aware of the first situation from the very beginning and could tell this was going to be a huge problem for Tom.

Whenever my wife and I are in the area, we invite Tom to join us dinner; and he readily accepts. On this occasion, His customer proceeded to invite himself as well, under the pretense of having heard about me and had always wanted to meet me.

The details of Tom's whole nightmare have been covered in only the sketchiest of terms. All Tom wanted was for it all to be over and get his life (and house) back. Tom worked tirelessly and wasoptimistic until the end that his payment for services would be honored.

The sad thing is that this customer was completely self-absorbed and oblivious to Tom's financial problems. He felt justified in what he paid Tom, (under duress) regardless of what agreements were understood before then. He would defend his position continually.

Unfortunately there are still a couple of unresolved issues that need to be dealt with before he can put this all behind him. I don't believe I have ever seen Tom so frustrated and angry.

Unbelievable. I understand how the anonymity of the internet gives people the idea that they can behave like scum online, but to treat a member of the community like that in person, to take away their livelihood and abuse their hospitality is beyond pathetic.

I don't care to know who this person is but I hope they've been banned from this site.

This!

Should there be any reason in hiding this persons identity? What if he does the same thing to another member?

Let's not start a lynch mob here - I didn't mean to stir up a sh!t storm, I just wanted to get it off my chest. I'm sure they know who they are and hopefully will see the error of their ways. In the meantime, several of us know who they are and will keep an eye out for our friends here on the network. I am not completely certain who was the perpetrator of the pill theft, but I (we) have a pretty good idea.

Let's just say that Tom may not be as willing to open his home to (practically) strangers in the future. It's a shame.

It does make me wonder, however, what else we may (eventually) find to be missing....

Re: Thanks to SVXfiles' customers....

First of all I would like to say Thank You, Di.
Remind me to stay on your "Good Side!"
Second during this time of duress I am blessed to have friends who have paid in advance for work "whenever I can get to it."
I have had a DONATION or two from people who wanted to thank me for past information
Tim,
Randy,
Rebecca,
Scott!
What, are you Guys HIGH?!?!
There are a few of you who have paid in advance for work not yet done, with the belief that when I can, I will get to it.
Unless I am dead, I will!
And thank you.

As to the missing pills, it came as a GREAT suprise

As to the guy who offered me $100.00 now and $100.00 later after he sold his car after 5 days (24 hrs per day) on the lift and then 3 days in the driveway "so that he would not have to pay".
We had an agreement.
You knew about it.
You have dissapointed me greatly.
Only counting the garage mortgage and my average electric bill,
NO PAPER TOWELS,
NO WELDING,
(welding greatly increases the electric bill and cost per day,
and yes, I welded on the car for hours.)
NO CHEMICALS,
NO TAXES,
NO COMPUTER,
NO FREE LOANER CAR THAT YOU USED LIKE IT WAS YOUR OWN,
NOT COUNTING CAR INSURANCE,
it costs $37.87 per day in my MOST hopeful look at the situation.
$37.87 X five days is $189.35.
Subtract that from $200.00.
That leaves $10.65 for five (to eight) days of having access to over $100,000.00 of garage and tools,
plus 43 years experiance.
So not counting wear and tear I made $2.13 per day if you only count the five days.
I think that I shall take the $10.65 and just blow it all on hats.

Re: Thanks to SVXfiles' customers....

Plus, If this was any other commercial garage space he was renting daily for such a low rate, it would not have living accommodations built in. It would probably be for normal business hours only.

He would have to spend about $75.00/night plus taxes for lodging in the area, out of his own pocket, IN addition to the $100 a day. That's over $600.00 in lodging alone (which he could not negotiate or delay paying)

Plus he has had his pearlie at Tom's for six months and has not charged him a dollar for storage.

Conservatively, I think he owes Tom an additional $600.00

$300.00 for the additional 3 days of shop time, as agreed upon.
$125.00 for 5 hours of labor, which is half his normal rate, using half his normal hands, as agreed.
O $40.00 Whatever the fair price of a used injector is?
O $75.00 Cancellation fee for coming in a day late, without warning, and preventing him from doing other jobs
O $40.00 Shop supplies (chemicals, solvents, greases, shop towels, welding gas, wire etc.) A normal business practice.

He had many chances to make this right in over more than a week, but made no effort to do unless his forced his hand. Even then, his meager offering, compared to Tom's generosity and hospitality, was wholly inadequate and insulting.

Re: Thanks to SVXfiles' customers....

BTW, Tom still has this customer's original pearlie there, awaiting repairs.

What OT didn't say was that, while the customer was there, he removed parts off the pearlie that Tom repaired to put on his other car. He Didn't pay for these parts yet.

So, its back to square one for the pearlie. What do you think OT should do with this car? Hold it for a $600.00 ransom, or tell the guy he is removing it from his property and to come and get it?
