The interesting thing is that there are very few members in comparison that are registered there. They all are members with one or more SVX, but many with SVXs have not registered. It keeps growing slowly but surely.

Now, what did I just say? Oh yea, Ron, pass me that box o wine.

In order not to be purged, I am posting this post while laying across my 4-poster and eating my POST Toasties. I am in such fear of being purged by the non-posting progrum that I'm think I'm suffering from post traumatic-shock syndrome.

I must remember to add a post on the Yahoo SVX site since I am also bipostual.

I'm so worried about this that I may go POSTAL.

(What a sneaky way to up my POST TOTAL)

Thumbs down Brakes smokin'

Hold up there hoss!!!

Glad to see a subject that gets some opinions flying. Small word of caution; one of the reasons mentioned for purging was to free up space. The question I would ask is, if somebody has never, or never in the last year posted, how are they using space?

The generalised point I am making would be to only purge if there is a valid reason. A lot of the more reticent members may just visit now and then, get some info on a problem, see if there are any meets near them, find out the name of a supplier etc etc.

This is part of the Network Charter, to supply support and information for SVX devotees. The fact that the communication is one-way with some members does not negate this.

Now if you want to go tough, and say anyone not paid up gets purged, that's a different kettle of fish.

The fact that we have a large membership means that we have a strong lobby for looking at parts supply and discounts. Should the network decide to work in concert with other Subaru clubs such as Impreza or WRX groups, whatever's out there, then this makes for really big numbers, and can flex some buying muscle.

Guys and gals, think outside the box, don't just purge numbers for the sake of tidiness.

Joe

As usual of late, I'm with Joe on this. As I sit here reading this thread I can't help but wonder what the big deal is. Why so hot to get rid of members that don't post? I guarantee a lot of invisible members get a lot from those who do and feel no need to post what someone else already has. Perhaps they use the search function to get their answers. Like Joe said, if they don't post then how can they take up space? If our purpose is to tidy things up around here then getting rid of non-posters won't do anything but make us appear smaller as a group. Instead, why not sh!t-can the top 20 posters (myself included)? After all they take up the most space with their key strokes. Dump them and purge their musings and that leaves a ton of space for everyone else.

Maybe someone can enlighten me on why purging non-posters is so important? Until then I will remain (for this post anyway) a sarcastic prick of a devil's advocate.

My Take....

I started with the idea that ..."Yeah... get rid of the dead weight."

But then I thought, "...... who cares who posts.... " Then I thought .... " this is dumb..... why not just let members contribute what they want, when they want, if they want."

I do think that creating some sort of data base as to where the cars are (not addresses, Just areas) would be great.

oh and by the way ..... has anyone mentioned anything about there being a shortness of space?.... If there was I missed it...

Thanks for all the good conversation everybody. This is what I like to see, many different opinions expressed, but in a civil diplomatic way. Sometimes around here we seem to have extremes, people either sit and only post with smilies and agree with non-controversial issues, never speaking up if they disagree. Or we have flame wars. A happy medium keeps ideas fresh IMHO.

Speaking of opinions, mine on this I guess was already known, but since it appears most are disagreeing, no worries, purging will probably not be pursued in any form or another. It was not to save space (unless an admin speaks up and confirms that just storing a dead log in takes up a ton of space, don't see how that would be though). It was just to clean things up and narrow down our membership numbers to people that are truly active and aware that they are even a member of this site.

As a member of the SVX World Network Board (for a few more weeks) please allow me to clear up one thing. You've probably heard Randy and other members of the board try to explain this point countless times and I'll try again. This set of forums, despite the similar name, is NOT the SVX World Network club that people pay annual dues for and can officially join. This is a free forum that anyone can join that just happens to be partially supported by the club. But when it comes down to it, this is a set of message forums run by the site administrators and is a separate entity of the club many of you may or may not be dues paying members of.
Once the SVXWN club is fully off the ground, it will be the official organization that would most likely seek out discounts, lobby with Subaru, etc. Dues paying members will be what is considered for numbers, and since the dues are paid on an annual basis, the membership will be "self-purging", anyone taking the time to renew dues once a year will obviously want to be an active member.
Meanwhile, this site will remain as a place the dues paying members frequent and use for communications, however there may be other options exclusively for the members as well. And aside from those members, this site will remain a free place to post for the rest of the world that is interested in the SVX, but not ready to take the plunge into dues paying membership.

Sorry that little spiel doesn't quite have to do with any of this purging issue, and it really doesn't support one side of the arguement or another. Just a lot of talk about members and such so I thought I would try to clear that up once again. Randy and any of the other board members can correct any part of that I may have gotten wrong.

I was just reacting to commuter's comment above, Mitch.

However, not throwing stones or anything, retaining locker space for unused accounts is a valid point, I know what he meant.

My broader point was that unless space or some other resource issue came into play, the need to purge was less acute, and other areas like the perceived size of the club became important.
