Lightbulb

With the nautical theme, Aredub, that'd be the Buick Regatta. Still wrong. The correct and final answer is the Buick Century. Tsu.

Survey says...

It wasn't so much a nautical "theme" as it was the designer being influenced by some classic runabouts...and the winner is...

....the last generation Buick Riviera. Don

Wink

Let's beat this to death, shall we? Are you saying the last generation Riviera's styling was influenced by the Chris Craft Riviera? OR... are you thinking of the boat tail Riviera of '72? Chris Craft did produce a mahogany speedboat with a vertical fin at the stern somewhere in the fifties. And, of course, there was a Century boat Company who produced mahogany speedboats from the 20's through the 50's. What does any of this have to do with SVX's? Oh.. They're all capable of sinking. Amen. Ron.

Heeeheeeeheeee...I found that out about 20 years ago. DO NOT mix likker, 1977 Subaru's, and spring run off! (Seems that you could actually forget to put them in 4WD back then!)

Badly beaten boats and Buicks that sink...

Ron,
The following quote was from the article Aredub referred us to in the first post of this string...

"The many high-performance luxury yachts that ply the deep blue waters off the Riviera's shores, Kovos says, best represent these tastes. So, he tried to reflect this in the SC 430's design. There is a nautical resonance in its sculpted, aerodynamic lines.
It does resemble a boat, but more the wooden speedboats of the 1930s than a modern yacht. And that's a good thing. It gives the new Lexus a classic, streamlined look that makes it instantly appealing."

I had recalled that when the last generation Riviera was introduced, one of the magazines did a styling critique on it, in which the stylist was quoted as wanting to include the lines of some classic boats in his design...in fact the article showed the comparisons with drawing of mahogany beauties from that period. I don't think it was Chris-Craft, but theirs was the only name that came to mind. Since Aredub brought our attention to the article, I wondered if anyone else had made the boat-connection.

My apologies for bringing it up... Don

And I suppose you'll tell us you don't remember eating it either!!

Would not see that as an obvious connection Don.

However, I justlove Rivieras. The original was one of the best proportioned Americal cars ever, designed by a guy called Bill Mitchell. Beautifully proportioned, elegant from nearly any angle.

The successor was not so well received, the "boat-tail" you mention, but I love them also, they have a great individuality, and are not badly proportioned. But they are huge.

Nice to see the people in Toyota being creative about making their top end cars, even if I am unsure about the shape. What the industry needs is an injection of imagination, they seem to be happy churning out the same old tripe, so long as we keep buying it.

Thinking of imagination, has anyone seen pictures of the new Osca Dromos, a mid-engined two seater, with Subaru flat four Sti 2.5 RS motive power and ETA bodywork??? Nice, real nice.

Joe

Osca Dromos....live from the Blue Room of the Roosevelt Hotel

< Would not see that as an obvious connection Don>

Exactly, Joe! That's why it made such a good trivia question! Anyway...

The last Riviera had a very clean design, one that I believe can stand the test of time. If it had a flaw, in my opinion, the tail was too long. It would be interesting to see one with a tastefully applied wing, to see if that would help break up that long back deck. I saw a photo of one that had been lowered a bit, with some very nice wheels, and it really transformed the car. The supercharged ones probably make fair interstate cruisers.

As for Osca Dromos...didn't he have a famous big band in Rio in the 30's?

Seriously, I don't think I've heard of Osca...feel free to fill me in and direct me to a photo. Don

I would agree with Joe. The original '63 Riviera is in the top 5 (my opinion) of all time great American designs. I don't think the name Buick appeared on it until '64, and as I remember, there was something about GM wanting the car to be labled as a Cadillac. As for classic speedboats & automobiles, I think I'd like to see a mahogany or teak wing & chrome docking rope cleats as an option for the Lincoln Navigator. Ron

Lots of those wood boats here. (Summer spot for the rich and famous, which makes me feel poor and useless ) As for Lincoln Navigators, ever seen one turned into a limo? I saw one yesterday, must be nice to have too much money on your hands! The thing had to be 3 SVX car lengths long. (Lengths long, is that proper?) A very strange, but yet interesting sight.

I saw two of these babies on a recent trip to Chicago. A black one and a white one. I just don't get it. Interesting, though, to be in a city in which limos outnumbered pick-up trucks 3 to 1.

<As for Lincoln Navigators, ever seen one turned into a limo? >

Don't they call those "tractor/trailers"? I think they have to pay some special tax when they park....something about their bumpers being in different zip codes... Don

I've heard that they're epuipped with GPS, so's the driver can find his way back to his seat, after he's let the passengers in.

Following this thread, It's interesting to see just how far off-topic this-off topic thread has gotten.

I've heard they need a harbor pilot to help them navigate the streets to the interstate (open water)
