The 'affordable' exotic

Actually, no, this time I'm not really talking about the SVX. Road and Track apparently has a segment, or at least for this purpose had one, about 'classic used cars.'

June's is about the NSX. R&T calls the NSX 'fast, frugal, fun - and remarkably reliable. You can get an NSX for as little as $29k retail, for instance.

But then flip back to the price of repairs.

A transmission overhaul realy isn't so bad - $2400. But, oh, look at this - replacing the timing belt and water pump? $1150. And what if the timing belt breaks - the car will simply grind to a halt, right?

Wrong - $4200 in engine damage.

What is you wreck the NSX? Think you can take it to any old body shop? Heh - it's all aluminum, and unless you can find someone who can TIG weld and properly heat repaired aluminum to retain its strength, you're SOL. Insurance companies apparently total out NSXs with relatively little damage to them

I plan on writing to R&T to see if they plan on featuring the SVX in this section.

screw the NSX....

it looks good and it is fast but it would be like climbing into a coffin just to drive the damn thing.

Cool

Having driven one, I have to say that it IS almost like driving a coffin at times... it's pretty cramped in there for my... shall we say... spacious frame. On the flip-side, I've driven (and own) REALLY small cars, and they fit me just fine... go figure.

Anyway, the NSX is a nice QUICK car... but I would never classify it as a FAST car. Sure, it can GO fast, but never in a million years would I consider doing more than 100 for more than a few minutes at a time... the car's very wearing at speed. The SVX on the other hand... well... in slightly more foolhardy days I drove my car from St. Louis to Kingdom City (about 150 miles I guess) at 112mph, solidly... I'm AMAZED I didn't get busted.

Hmm... there's no MO patrol here are there??? ?

Seriously though, the NSX is a nice car, and definitely exotic looks... but it's a Japanese Ferrari wannabe. It's a 1990's car with similar feel to an 80% accurate reproduction of a Testarossa... a Ferrari from 15 years ago!!!

Ya pays yer money...

i have heard......

that because of the MR configuration that it is easy to get squirrely and that it does take a professional to get the most out of the car. i heard from mario andretti when in motor trend or one of those mags he tested all the supercars: nsx, viper, maranello, vette, lotus espirit, and others. oh and MR is mid-engine, rear wheel drive.
