Questions!

Ok now that I have My SVX I have some questions!

I have noticed that when my car shifts into 2nd gear it shifts kind of hard is this normal? And it also like's to shift down a lot?
Is this just how this transmission act's? The Transmission in my car was replaced at 100 thousand and it now has 135 thousand on it! It was replaced from what I have been told with a 96 transmission. It also has a Trans Cooler that was put on when the trans was replaced.

Next thing when I rev the motor at about 2500RPM I can here a humming coming from under the car.. Any idea what that could be? I can only here it for like 2 seconds! It almost sounds like something is lose under there!

And my last question is for the Colorado SVX owners. I need to take my car in to get some stuff done! is there anyone locally that I can trust to change the oil and flush my trans. I don't know if I should trust just anyone with this car!

Javelinman
P.S. I love my SVX Such a cool car!

Well you're an enthusiastic one, aren't you?

I can answer a couple of questions for you. The first is that most people here are going to tell you that your transmission is going and that you'll need a new one soon. Is that really the case? I dunno. Can you trust any mechanic to tell you honestly what's wrong? It's doubtful. Few Subaru dealers know the transmission beyond a 'replace/leave alone' decision.

Does your 'power' light blink when you start the car?

The noise you're hearing is likely the exhaust resonator. It's welded to the center pipe. Take it to an exhaust shop and, if they determine that's the source of the noise (and not a heat shield), have them cut it out and replace it with a straight piece of pipe. That should be under $50 to do.

Good luck and congrats on your SVX! I hope it serves you well!

I agree with Nick that your noise is probably the exhaust resonator. The trannies I had in my SVX always had a firmer 1-2 shift than any of the other gears..

Yup, mine is like that too. 1-2 shift is the hardest of all.

YEA I'm enthusiastic person when it comes to cars..
God I hope that my transmission isn't going out!!!! That would suck more then anything!! I JUST GOT THE CAR!
Truly I don't think its going out it shifts fine in all the other gears and it go into reverse perfect. I was reading some place that if the trans is starting to go it will shift hard into reverse??? Anyway I'm going to get the trans flushed as soon as I find someone around here to do it for me and I going to add synthetic trans oil and hope that will prolong a trans rebuild.
I talked with a friend who got a new SVX in 93. His car made it 145 thousand miles without having the trans go out on him! Hell my car only has 35 thousand on the trans! ( I trying to give myself moral support)
I really hope this is going to be a good car for me I have never owned a Japanese car and I have been telling myself that I would never ever own one ( I have always been a die hard American car guy) But I fell in love with the SVX and had to have one. Now its my daily driver and today was my first day driving it to work!! ( I had FUN). And boy do I get funny looks driving this car....

I didn't mean to scare you. It just seems that, no matter what the symptom is, the response will be 'my tranny did that a week before it died.' I swear I could post, 'tranny shifting normally,' and I'd get ten 'save your pennies' replies.

To be fair, my wife's Legacy (very similar tranny) has a hard 1-2 upshift when it's cold. Other than that it's perfectly normal and strong.

Flushes, if done properly and early, can be effective. I think the majority of failures that happen immediately after a flush (mine included) can be blamed on other factors - like the tranny going too long without being serviced in the first place. With only 35k miles on yours, I'd consider it safe. Flushes which simply have the transmission draw in new fluid while pumping out the old place no extraordinary strain on anything - it's just how the tranny operates every day, except that it's getting new fluid back instead of old, slightly cooler fluid.

Yes, SVX trannies can and do last awhile. Mine failed permanently at about 133k. That's hardly stellar, but it is above average for an SVX.

Exclamation

The hard 1-2 shift COULD be the resistor failing (mine was). It's a cheap & easy fix. I don't know if it's advisable to go synthetic fluid at this stage of the game. Synthetic tends to find ways to leak through old seals.

Ron (familiar with leaks).

javelin:

i would recommend taking your svx to a shop called s-wings stuff automotive. the owner actually attended our colorado svx meet last august. they've only changed my oil and filter, but i will be taking it there for more service. or if i ever, god forbid, need to repair my svx. last month i sent another newbie i met to s-wings and he had great things to say. the shop is located at 1200 s. bannock st. in denver (roughly broadway and i-25). their number is 303.777.8658 and their website is: http://www.s-wingstuff.com
