Driving in 3rd gear
All this talk/advice of driving in D3 (around town of course)...so I try it yesterday and I noticed more immediate response,etc...BUT I also noticed that when I'm cruising at say 45mph and I take my foot off the gas the rpm's drop to less then 1000. Is that normal or abnormal? Most cars would "hold" 3rd gear if you let off and provide engine breaking to slow you down. When I let off in D3 I am basically coasting like a manual in neutral. What do you think?

coasting feeling
I've noticed this behavior in my car too but only after I unplug the resistor behind the battery. there is also a sorta catch and release effect if in 3 and going faster (50 ish) and release the throttle. I can't quite explain it but it's a small trade off for the firm shifts that you get with it unplugged.

Mine drops down just a little bit, maybe down to 2000 rpms or so at that speed. I remember someone else on this board noting that their SVX did not slow down (same as yours) in 3rd gear, but did in fourth.

This is very interesting. I would think that all the tranny would do the samething. I do not know what mine does and I'll check it out when I get a chance. I have noticed that the engine braking does not always work when I am using the cruse control. The braking started to work last week for the first time and then it stopped again.
Off hand have all your trannys been rebuilt? |

Hmm, intresting. I must check this onetime when I drive.
46 mph are about 70 km/h. I will try this tomorrow in 3 D and D. Till now, I don't feel, that the motor goes under 1000 rpm. Greetings from Switerland Kusi |

To me it drop down only a little bit, it doesn't matter which gear. But never under 1000 rpm. How it looks, I don't have this effect.

As I wrote you in the SVX Forum from my page, here the answer on english. I drive like you always in position "D". Only when I drive up or down on hills/mountain streets, I change in 3 or 2 that the motor help for slow down, so I don't need much the breaks. Greetings an we will hear us again on http://www.subarusvx.ch.vu Markus |

Okay I checked this out. Very interesting it is. In at 50 and coasting the engine rpm drops to 1200 rpm and in 3rd coasting it drops to 950 rpm. This is without the tranny TC locked up in 3rd or 4th.
