Front Diff

Are there any differences in the front diff on the transmission of a 91 Legacy and the 92 SVX besides the TC? PLEASE tell me NO!

Randy, to use a Legacy front diff, you'll also have to use the Legacy Rear diff so the ratio's match..........I think you'd like it with the lower gears in the Evil Twin.

Huck, Are the housings for the differentials the same? I know from your prior posts the guts can be changed.

DARN! I still have the perfectly good (when it was taken out of the SVX) Legacy Tranny (From a '91 Legacy, rebuilt, less than 10K miles on it) Was hoping that the front diff would match and I'd just have to trade out the TC.

My problem is this: A bearing in the front diff has apparently gone "wonky" and is causing diff oil to leak into the tranny. I'm looking for a "cheap" fix instead of having to buy an entire NEW TRANNY! CRAP!

Are you certain it's not just the shaft seal in the front pump housing that's leaking? It would still require pulling the tranny and splitting the diff and pump housings.

Well, to quote the punchline from an old vaudeville routine, "Elephino."

When I had mine rebuilt I was trying to get by on the cheap and questioned the rebuilder about the need/price of the front shaft seal. He said he would do the job without the seal but would offer no warrany as a result - and these guys know Subaru trannys - recognized it on sight, even when pulled out of the back of a Toyota. You (per my rebuilder again) should also replace the tube (don't know if that's part of the seal kit) as it can get distorted during removal. best of luck

Thanks lee. My quandry in all this is, "did the rebuilder do the seals when they rebuilt the tranny, and botch the job?" or, "Did they just not bother, thinking it 'looked' okay?" The tranny was rebuilt by an independent shop that really is not familiar with Suby trannies, but, I REALLY couldn't afford the 4,600.00 price tag the local dealership wanted to replace my tranny.

Yes the housings are the same, so you could swap the SVX front diff ring and pinion gears into the Legacy tranny, but I still say put the Legacy tranny in and get a Legacy rear diff, if you want I'll try to locate one for you.

Actually, I can't be certain of anything, since I'd have to pull the tranny and split the diff to find out.

The "scrubbing" sound that I've been hearing for more than a year (which has gotten louder since the gear oil seeped out), would tend to make me think it was the bearing you indicated to me earlier.

Guess I'm going to have to take it to a "specialist." But, since we have none in this neck of the woods, I'll have to settle for a transmission shop.

Thanks, Phil I'll keep that in mind. The tranny in question was an e-bay purchase. I was just thinking that it might be easier to pull the tranny and slap another diff on it, rather than have to try and rebuild it.

Need I express how jealous I am that you're gettin a five-speed? May you have a speedy recovery, so you can enjoy it.

to tell you the truth randy, i wouldnt feel bad about just selling you the front diff. I cant imagine that there is a market for the actual gear box which is slipping. let me know.
PS thanks alot, im feeling a lot better its just quite swollen. Im very excited for the 5 speed. I decided to pull out all the stops. I have a 2003 forestor with 4.11 diffs and has only 2600 miles on it!!!! Also went with ACT racing clutch and STi TRans mount. Boy oh boy do i dream about it every night!
