Question How do the rear wheels engage?

Does any one know how the rear end engages and why I'd have front wheel drive but no rear wheel action?

The rear wheels are controled by a series of transfer clutches in the rear of the transmission. These clutches engage to put power to the rear wheels. If there is a failure of these clutches, or the electronics controling these clutches, it will cause the rear wheels to function improperly, or not at all.

First, I assume you do have the all-wheel drive model (some weren't).

Second, do you have a flashing power light on startup? It comes on, then goes out, then flashes in 16 (I think) short pulses. If it does flash, then you need to enter the diagnostic mode and see if the tranny thinks there's something wrong with the mechanism. There is a solenoid and transfer clutches that make AWD work.

Third, I'm assuming you don't show the FWD symbol lit up (in the upper left part of the dash where the ATF temp warning light is at). If you do, then remove the 10amp fuse in the engine compartment.

Be nice to your FWD SVX until you get the AWD fixed or you may be fixing the front differential as well.

If you have no warning lights or noises, it is most likely the transfer valve assembly.

*sigh*

....that's what happened to mine. on the plus side, it was kinda neat to go peeling around with the front tires spinning for a couple weeks until I got it fixed

same thing happened to mine,,,but without any lights coming on...the clutches were worn down....they replaced them, at the Subaru dealer for $800...come to find out,,,that only was the beginning of my problems...I found out this week....that some of the reason my tranny overheated..was because of the materials left behind by those clutches started to plug things up in the tranny...oh, I also found out that when the dealer replaced those clutches..the hub they ride on was warn down..and would have caused the clutches not to engage quickly..oh well, on the plus side...with the tranny rebuild, i get those same clutches replaced new.

That is why, when my tranny goes, I am going to get a SOA rebulit. The whole thing will be fixed and clean and have a 2yr warantee including the front diff.

Wildfire............is the serial # of your 94 JF1CX3239RK101255 and did you just purchase it from a dealer on North Ave in GJ? If so, I'd like to discuss it (the car) with you.
