Rear Side Marker Lights Base Removal?

Has anyone toyed with them at all? I see how little room you have to do anything with them but there is some workable room. The biggest problem I see is the design itself but that can always be bypassed. Does anyone know if these require being heated up before you can remove the base/shell with the tabs? Has anyone here successfully removed them without breaking them?

Re: Rear Side Marker Lights Base Removal?

Looking at doing this myself - but not for a few months - here in NZ we do not get the lights - only reflectors.

The marker lights that I just received from USA, were broken in transit - so keen to swap over the inner section to fit onto my NZ outer area.

Anyone done this as in "taken them apart" ?

Re: Rear Side Marker Lights Base Removal?

These open just like the rest of the tail lights, heat them at 225 for 7 mins and peel them apart unclipping them as you go.

put them back together by heating again for 7 mins and pushing them together.

These are ones I had previously opened and then placed them back together without pushing or heating but the glue was still hot enough to hold on many parts of it.

Wow. There really is no room behind there. :-/

Oh well. I guess the only way around it is to design an new casing/housing. That sucks. Thanks for the pictures and info though!
*Come to think of it, I forgot the housing rests on the body with a snug fit. That would be a challenge indeed.

leds are still a very good possibility.
I recently had mine open and while I didnt take pics the led strip used is ribbon flat.

These are the ones as seen from the outside.

Re: Rear Side Marker Lights Base Removal?

I was really hoping I could fit them up with about 6-8 of these:

However, I just don't think there is the space. Like, at all. There may still be hope for a spot behind the SVX logo on the rear center light bar.... but I'm not so sure I want to go toying around with those as they are much much more expensive to replace than the side markers. Ugh.

As long as those dont get very hot (and you remove the diffuser) there might be just enough room for those, but they would be touching or close to.

Re: Rear Side Marker Lights Base Removal?

You know they make waterproof flexible ribbon style SMD LEDs
These are like 2mm thick, if that. They are all over ebay.

Here is a pic of a set of 12" of red "FlexLED" brand from autozone I have in my svx, so you can see the thickness:

I got 12" of red FlexLED under my dash to light the front floor, and under the back of the front seats to light the rear floor.
They are pretty damn bright, here is a video of them in the daytime:

I am pretty sure that is what my rear side marker leds are.

Re: Rear Side Marker Lights Base Removal?

The only problem with the ribbons are the LEDs are spaced too far apart. It's ok if you're doing as pictured above with a line but I was hoping for the entire thing to be illuminated with them. I'm not sure, there may be ribbons that have closely placed LEDs or eventually they make them.
