My only thought is that coolant temp sensor is so cheap and easy to install that you may as well try it.

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Seth,
I've recently experienced the same symptoms with my '97. Forgive me if you've already mentioned this, but does the car readily re-fire after stalling? Mine popped a CEL the same trip/day for Duty Sol A, but I believe that was incidental and unrelated to the stalling problem. I swapped a known good (re-soldered) MAF yesterday, and first test run was uneventful. I plan to get her out a couple of times today and give it another chance.

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Cool. I hadn't even considered the coolant temp sensor, figuring the TPS was the next logical culprit. I have spares for both, so maybe will try the CTS first if it stalls again. Thankfully I have two other cars, but it bugs me not to be able to rely on my "Good" car.
It seems every time I plan to take her on a trip of more than 50 miles she misbehaves and stays home. Let's see, Rancho Cucamonga, 800 mi round trip, turned around after 100 miles with overheating and no A/C in 105+ temps; Portland Ore, popped CEL on the way down the street leaving on trip, and latest, 700 mile round trip to SLO-town, stalling intermittently. Garage Queen indeed!

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Also going to add the Tps is also set to .5v so it rules that out.

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Thanks for the heads up Seth. Mine has been out 4 times now, latest about 50mi with no hint of mayhem. I just saw a MAF on ebay for $100. Would hope you could do better than that here from a member. Gonna give mine some more time and mileage before tearing into original to re-solder it. Hate to tear it up. Good luck with a replacement!

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Funny thing is that I did resolder BOTH and it's still doing it. May try again but thinking it just bit the dust.

Seth have a good look at the wires that go to the plug, maybe one of them has worked loose.

Ok Harvey will do. I know my soldering skills don't suck so I think the ones I did already are good. Should take it to this guy I know who has a NASA degree in soldering

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Hey Seth, any secret to getting the cover off the MAF without breaking anything? I checked the connector wiring when I swapped them and all was secure.

It is mainly the wires to the MAF that are not clipped into the spot on the air box that wobbles around to work the pins. to crack the soldered joints.

Harvey.

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

I used a razor blade and a flat head screw driver to remove the rubber sealer then gently pried the cap off.

Re: Car Stalling/Shutting Off

Thanks for the benefit of your experience, Seth. I'll try doing mine. And Harvey's comments make me think I might look more closely at the connector and see if there's a non damaging way to tighten up the pin connectors while I'm fooling with it. Just hate to damage them.
