For the inner tie rod it takes special wrenches.
The outer is easier.
The most important thing is to count the amount of revolutions that it takeas to remove it, usually around 16-18 and install the new one to the same spec.
Bring it on down and I can show you how!

They are MUCH easier on a lift!
I think I'll take you up on that Tom. Lets schedule something for November. Sean

Re: Wobble/wiggle

Anyone have pictures or a how to on the inner tie rod?

The shakes are getting worse. Seems like about 4mm play in the passenger side and maybe 2mm in the driver side.

Tried to work on it today but the service manual scared me away so I put it back together before I broke something too expensive. Seems like the service manual wants you to remove the rack to do the inner and there is a chance of destroying the rack if you aren't careful. I already bought the inner and outer tie rods for both sides and 2 boot kits (ugh -didn't realize you only need one boot kit)

Perhaps I should take this to someone. I've put an engine and a transmission in this car myself but the tie rod is scaring me.

Re: Wobble/wiggle

you don't have to remove the rack. service manuals always say that. they sell a "inner tie rod tool" that makes this job nice and easy.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002SRGFW/...hvptwo=&hvqmt=
not the cheapest or best just the first one that popped up in . you slide the tool over the end of the inner tie rod (after removing the outer tie rod) and insert the correct size piece then simply unscrew. if the outer tie rods are ok then you can just break the jam nut loose and spin the inner until they separate, you can do this without even taking the wheels off.

Re: Wobble/wiggle

I recently bought an inner tie rod tool. Worked great except for on an XC70 the other day. Why do those swedes have to make things complicated sometimes. (It was actually a belgium made Volvo, so I suppose I should blame them )

Also makes a really quick job.

Re: Wobble/wiggle

Thanks for the help! Any idea what size the insert for the inner tie rod is? Can't seem to find it in the service manual.

This is the one I purchased, though from a different source. Comes with a variety of sizes and one of them should work for the SVX.

Oops, just saw snowmachine posted a link to the same one

Re: Wobble/wiggle

Thanks! wasn't sure that one would work since all but 1 size is standard.

Re: Wobble/wiggle

you can probably check the specs on your new tie rods to find out the size, a lot of them tend to be standard sizes even on foreign cars.

When I was a kid growing up in Texas, my Aunt Annie dipped snuff, and I would swear that on occasions I could hear some sort of "wobble noise"

i would check your ball joints if tie rods and wheel bearings are tight. sometimes you can have a kind of wobble if the ball comes up out of the socket a little and then wobbles back into place.
