Go me.. A/C died yesterday!

Do yo know how hot a black on black on black car in Florida gets in the summer? OMG!!!!!! I was heading out to pick up a tow hitch from my wife's SUV and my A/C started getting warmer and warmer. I usually am very comfy with it set on auto 74. I start dropping the temp to 65 and it finally starts blowing warm. First chance I get to look under the hood, there is a yellow leak dye and PAG oil all around the back of the pass side headlight, pool under the charcoal canister and even in the undertray. Good times. I cant wait to have a look at how hard to find and how expensive replacement parts are gonna be. Go me!

New condensor is only ~$275 ish. That's about the worst case scenario. I'd check the lines leading from the condensor to the dryer canister, and the o-rings on the dryer canister connections.

Yeah checking the o rings on both ends is the first place I am gonna start. If I am lucky, it will only be an o-ring and a recharge... if not........... a CTSV is in my very near future.

The A/C lines are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. I don't see why that would discourage you, unless your car has an encyclopedia's worth of other issues.

Re: Go me.. A/C died yesterday!

Had a quick look... it appears that the leak occurred on the high pressure switch located between the receiver dryer and condenser. I say that because the majority of leak dye is concentrated below the r/d (there is a puddle) and all over the high pressure switch. Even the charcoal canister (side facing the front of the car) is coated. Now I will have to try and pressurize to verify. Lets hope its something simple.

The pressure switch was leaking on one of Tom's old Pearlies. That makes sense.

Re: Go me.. A/C died yesterday!

what about the compressor itself? that's be ruled out as the culprit? Wouldn't that be the most expensive part of the system to replace?

Re: Go me.. A/C died yesterday!

You can get a remanufactured compressor for about $350.

Holy hell. If my uncle could still pull money from behind my ear I'd get a new compressor but that's steep..

Any aftermarket options or maybe something we can pull off another car?

Actually, I remembered wrong. This one has been on my silver for over a year now (only I think I paid more):

R-134a. Good and frosty.

As I recall, OEM is about $350 times two.

Re: Go me.. A/C died yesterday!

I went by and chatted with the previous owner. The hard line and pressure switch are 2 yrs old. He'd know because the exact same thing happened on this car while he owned it.
I ordered a new switch (and line) from Subaru $73 iirc.
The question is, why did both switches fail? Typically pressure will build if there isnt sufficient cooling of the condenser. ie external blockage, aux fan inop etc. So I guess I am going to have to give the entire A/C system a thorough inspection.
