Auto-Seatbelt Code 16

Today my driver-side automatic seatbelt ceased its ability to close.
I did the diagnostic and came up with a code 16.
16 "Shoulder belt buckle switch and front limit switch on driver's side are OFF”

From what I have gathered through a thorough search of the subject in this forum is that the front limit switch is stuck open.
Is this correct?

I manually cranked the belt back to the closed position and it re-opens as soon as I open the door, but will not close when I close the door again (I did this 3 times to be sure)

I need to now get at and test that switch.
Any pointers on panel and switch removal?

I also need to get the seatbelt computer out and test and re-solder the relays, as I have a feeling that the sub-box that I have installed right below it has shaken some solder joints loose. I know how to get at it.

I will also check the connectors that are below the rear window

For now, I manually cranked the belt latch back to the rear position and dis-connected the control box (you can do this with no panel removal through the trunk latch hole)

Am I missing anything that I did not dig up?

And a big THANK YOU to all the posters that contributed to all of the great information on this subject.

Re: Auto-Seatbelt Code 16

I still do not have this sorted.

The connections are all in tact.
The front switch checked out OK
Rear switch is OK
The motor is fine.
I removed the computer and desoldered and tested all the relays and they are all OK. Checked all the solder connections and did a little touch-up, but still nothing.

I am at a loss

I guess it is a problem in the computer silicone logic.

Any other areas to check or test?

I'll put in a request for the part (seatbelt computer) in the correct section of the forum, but if you see this post and have one lying around, shoot me a PM.

Thanx

Re: Auto-Seatbelt Code 16

I can't say about the code but as far as your operation I had a similar problem where the seat belt will move when you open the door but will not retract. I found that when I turn the key on or shut the door if you wiggle the upper buckle it will catch and retract. I may get one or two full functions out of it before it gets stuck again. I am wondering if your problem is that your buckle isn't making it to the fully open position to close the switch (haven't checked the schematics to see if this is a normally open or a normally closed switch but guessing it is n/o and closes on contact). So if it doesn't see the buckle at full open or full closed position it doesn't know where to go probably generating the code 16 for open sensor (thinks it should be closed). I would check your track for interference as someone else suggested, possibly spray in some lube (careful not to stain your headliner). Maybe someone else has other ideas though.

Re: Auto-Seatbelt Code 16

I fixed this in my Claret by eliminating automatic belts and going to a manual seat belt setup from a '97.

Thanks sowsie,

I know that it is not the case though. The switch is a normally open switch that closes when the button is pressed and I verified the operation of the switch at the connector, so I know that it is closing when the belt latch is in the forward position. I also disconnected the switch and tried to jumper the end going to the computer and still nothing.

Cheers

I like this idea very much.
Maybe one day I will find a 97 parts car and do the swap, but until then, I would really like to get my old autobelt working again.

Re: Auto-Seatbelt Code 16

If you have checked all the switches, the wiring, the mechanicals, then the only thing left is the controller. If everything else checks out and functions as you say then I would tend to agree with your assessment. I would see if someone has a spare or is willing to let you borrow one for verification, plenty of parts cars being posted up too.

94.5 SVXi and up had the manual belts so you don't need to go searching for an oh so rare 97
