Anyone have an opinion on vinyl replacement windows?

Looking at some replacement windows for my home. Anyone have a brand recommendation? It sure is confusing.

I used windows made by MI Home Products. They're actually made north of Harrisburg. A very good quality window. They made a MASSIVE difference in my gas bill.

You can find your local distributor by going here:

Re: Anyone have an opinion on vinyl replacement windows?

Pay attention to the locking mechanisms, the frame strength and of course the E rating (so you can collect your free money). Each "good" company offers crap models and offers good quality windows. Never buy something that the dealer doesn't have a sample window in stock of. If you aren't putting them in yourself then get in writing EXACTLY what they will do to prep the window (i.e. removing old and re-calking, foam crack filling, pulling the trim and insulating properly). The best of window isn't much better than the worst if you don't have the surrounding sealed properly (and if you live in the neighborhood I think you do then your old enough it doesn't meet the current energy code).

Once you think you've narrowed your choices down (and don't limit yourself to the big names like Anderson or Pella) then find out how long the dealer has been selling the window then go on the website for the window company and see how far back you can get parts for their out of date stuff.

I have no idea what the model is. The company is owned by a friend of mine, so I got an 'insider' deal. I sent them measurements and went to the factory and picked up the windows.

I replaced all my windows last year with Pella. Vinyl exterior and pine interior, double hung. Excellent quality and not too expensive. I got them at Lowes in Ogdensburg, NY. They were about half the price they sell for in Canada.

Re: Anyone have an opinion on vinyl replacement windows?

I would like to have someone install them for me, but I'll probably end up doing it with the help of my brother inlaw. The few salesmen that I met with didn't leave me with a real warm trusting feeling. Quite the opposite.

They were very very easy to install. If you have any ability with regards to doing stuff like that, you'll have no problem.

I went with single hung windows as I never open the top part.

Re: Anyone have an opinion on vinyl replacement windows?

they are easy to install if you don't have a lot of wood/metal work that has to be done to make them fit properly. I just had this done at my place and it is great but the guys that did it really worked their rears off doing it.

It is a shame you aren't any closer to me as I had them doen by a guy in New Holland and I'm jst not sure he would make the trip that far to do yours.

Give me his name, if he doesn't want to take it he may be able to recommend someone. New Holland isn't that far if they need the work.

Re: Anyone have an opinion on vinyl replacement windows?

see if you can find a vinyl kraft or vinyl craft dealer. ive installed well over 2000 windows with my boss over a 3 year period before i left the business, ive delt with a few, but they were the best i used in my opinion, thats going over quality, cosmetics and finished product. btw, be carefull for sky high r factor. in fact, ignore r factor all together if someone tries to use it as a selling point. if you have a window world, find out if they use allside windows in your region, those are pretty good. DO NOT go with silverline windows, unless you go with the highest end series which are to expensive. if you have large windows, dont go with pella or anything thats aluminum clad wood, they WILL start to sag over the years, and large windows in this material are hard to open.

dont take this the wrong way pella owners, but you would be suprised at how many replacements we did were because of unsatisfied pella customers.

and i cannot stress this enough. YOU NEED EXPERIANCED INSTALLERS! when i first started i worked with a guy who did windows for years at this point, and still stuffed the heck out of insulation, and kept it from insulating. if you do it yourself, take your time, and dont rush or cut corners. if you do, youll be paying for it later... trust me. i had to do so many botched jobs, it wasnt fun.
