Recommended source for front axles
I need to replace both front axles. Searching indicates quite a savings using aftermarket components. Those of you who have gone this route, have you had good long term results? Is any supplier highly recommended? Or is an OE subaru part the best way to go.
Thanks. Bill Last edited by lsupcar; 09-14-2009 at 09:53 AM. |

Re: Recommended source for front axles
I'm getting ready to do this as well. From all the research I've done it seems that Advance Auto Parts has them fairly cheap, and they seem to be just fine quality-wise.

Re: Recommended source for front axles
+1 I work there. I have had one in for over a year with no issues. Think the price is around $60. I have noticed lately (while bored) and searching the system for parts... some are starting to become unavailable....

Re: Recommended source for front axles
NAPA is another good source. They are about the same price there.

Re: Recommended source for front axles
i changed my passenger side about a year ago and i got it from svxfiles....
umm, how do you know if you need a new one? the one i just put it might be faulty....but idk...i get a "clunk" sound under acceleration when the wheels are straight and to the right but not the left and it keeps "clunking" till i get around 25mph. when i accel from a stop i have to turn slightly to the left to keep it from "clunking". is the axle or is the diff? PS i just put a new tranny in a in Feb.

Re: Recommended source for front axles
Subaru Sells reman halfshafts. I've had bad luck with those from autozone and o'reily. Never tried advance. I put some from Napa in my legacy and it was a huge mistake, the first one i got clicked and the second one vibrated under load. If yours just have torn boots you're better off replacing the boots and using your original axles.

Re: Recommended source for front axles
Nifty, where can I find the subaru reman units? Are the ones from Subaru parts.com or !st subaru parts new or reman? They both list in the $350 range.
Thanks. Billl |

Re: Recommended source for front axles
Call your subaru dealer and ask for a reman axle. The part number will end in RA. they are available for 92 and 93 year cars only as the later ones use the lifetime BJ plastic boots. I don't know the part number off hand but endwrench had a list of them at one time, you could search there

Re: Recommended source for front axles
I'm almost to my second year in the set I have now, and I got them from SvxFiles for a very reasonable price.
You should talk to him. Not reman'd
