Re: BIG Problems...I think
Sure I understand that. I'm trying to get all the opinions I can so I have a better idea of what I'm dealing with. I've been searching for info (mostly pictures and diagrams) of lifters so hopefully I can understand what is meant by "collapsed lifters". Am I correct to assume that once the oil is filled back up and I have proper oil pressure again the lifters will begin operating properly or would they be damaged if they are collapsed?

Ok thanks for the help. I'll go ahead and give it a try. I'll post how it goes.

Re: BIG Problems...I think
Well, turns out this problem is as bad as I feared. The Subaru technician listened to the noise and right away said it was bottom end. When he pulled off the oil pan and looked at it he said some of the rod bearing were shot and the crankshaft is scored real bad. So I guess it's time to start a rebuild.
Any one know where's the best place to find crankshaft and bearings and rings too while I'm at it?

Re: BIG Problems...I think
How many miles on the engine? If you're under 200k miles, I'd suggest going with what Young Tom has suggested -- fill it back up with oil, fix the leak(s) and drive it.
-Bill p.s. do you think the dealership might be looking for work?

Re: BIG Problems...I think
+1
I bought mine with an exhaust leak and after fixing that noticed a knocking noise. I've driven it and its done just fine. It starts EVERY time and runs good other than the knocking which we figure is from a spun bearing probably from getting run low on oil.(and no its not valve noise common with Subys) Edit: I've put about 6000 miles on it since I bought it and with the trans blown, I am driving at higher RPMs almost constantly. Re: BIG Problems...I think
98,000. I suppose it's possible the dealer just wants my money, except that I already filled it with oil and ran it again and it did go away for about 10 miles then came back and sounded a lot worse. When I get the chance I will have the technician to show me what he sees wrong.

It was 10w30 that I used but I can try heavier.

Re: BIG Problems...I think
If you spun the bearings in it then its toast...if it runs though...put her back together and drive it until you find the parts you need.
Did the tech say if the crank was salvageable? Or are you looking for one of those? If it is...might not be the best idea to get using a crapped out bearing on it.

On an inline or a v-style engine, I would say he *might* have been able to make that deduction by removing the caps and inspecting the journals and bearings. But on our engines, it is not possible. So he is making a judgment based on the sound alone. While it is possible, I know he never saw the crankshaft to see if it was scored or not. And to answer your question on where to get the parts.... They are dealer only except for the bearings which are EJ22t bearings, just order two sets of mains and 6 pairs of rod bearings. You could always buy one of our short or long blocks pre-assembled Tom Last edited by TomsSVX; 08-21-2009 at 04:25 AM. |

Re: BIG Problems...I think
Tom,
How much are your short blocks? Budfreak (Jason) PMed me from World Forums says he has a complete engine for $600 +shipping. I know he's not the most popular guy around here, but is that a decent deal?

Re: BIG Problems...I think
yes it is a decent deal, but you are still replacing an engine with another used engine which may or may not have issues or will have issues in the short future. A reman is the better route to take but not always the cheapest.
