Long time lurker saying hi

Howdy, I've been stalking this board for years now, got a 92 claret 3 years ago and finally decided to come out of my shell. Mostly use it for the winters/rain, my other driver (2000 Z28) doesn't do well in those conditions but thought I'd say hi. Love the car, nicknamed it Valdez for the oil leak coming from the front, but thats for another day. Never driven anything like it and aside from the 11 mpg (live in a city on a hill) I couldn't ask more for a car in the snow. I'll hit up the registration board here soon.

11 MPG ??? How are you calculating your mileage? The SVX should get more than that climbing up the side of Mt Everest driven by a sumo wrestler.

Checking by filling the tank, reseting the trip meter then next fill divide by gallons. Can't tell why, because I've done plugs, wires, air and fuel filter, something must be wrong or I'm driving it wrong. Averages 11 in the city and 28 on the freeway so thats okay with me, only a 7 mile drive to work anyway.

28 mpg is right on for highway driving so apparently it is just because of all the hills. Crazy stuff I guess

Re: Long time lurker saying hi

Do you drive that 7 miles with the pedal to the floor doing 140mph? Or in reverse perhaps?

The best I've ever squeezed out of mine is 14.5 mpg, using the same calculation method. And that was only after 2 brand new OEM o2 sensors, new air filter, new fuel filter, new PCV valve, seafoaming the intake and fuel system, and running nothing but premium fuel. Plugs are the only thing I haven't done yet (but are on the schedule when I have a free weekend). I haven't taken any long expressway trips yet though, so I don't know what the hwy mileage is.

I have similar driving habits to you though, I have a ~8-9 mile commute, 100% in-town. Lots of stop and go traffic. I'm hoping it's just my driving habits, because I'm nearly out of things to fix.

$25 worth of front end seals and a saturday afternoon will fix your oil leak problem right up. My car left a huge puddle everywhere I parked it until I did the front end reseal.

I bought this car for similar reasons as you - needed a decent, reliable all-weather car that was interesting / cool, and not a truck. My other cars suck in the snow. BTW, I am also an F-body fan

Yeah, I actually got it after trying to take a del sol with 16 inch low profiles in Duluth in the snow... much to say, it met a wall for a nice little hug. Couple scrapes but still drivable. Drove a SVX and it felt perfect. As for the F body I waited so I could find a nice camaro/trans am i jumped to get it. (I'm a GM parts counterman, so i get parts for cheap well, cheaper....)

Hello Dave. You're very welcome.

11 mpg is low. Check that the pistons in your brake calipers are free, not sticking on.

Another tip is remember to turn off the aircon when you have the cabin up to temp. The pump uses a lot of juice at town speeds.

A last thing you should try out is round town, drive it in 3 rather than D. Select D for dual carriageway or main highway work over 50 mph. In 3 it runs on a sweeter part of the torque curve.

Joe
