Left rear axle popping out of differential

I finally figured out why my AWD is not working. The left axle pops out of the diff slightly and bingo no rear drive. When the axle is popped back in the rear drive works.
What is supposed to hold the axle in place? Is there a circlip or snap ring which has come off inside the differential or is the end of the axle worn and needs to be replaced?
I have a line on some used rear axles but don't want to buy them if I only need a circlip or snap ring.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

How far does it pop out?
Subaru calls it a circlip, (PN#28033PA040)
I don't know if someone has been at your rear differential before
but you can have a circlip on the axle, and one in the diff preventing it from fully seating.

Shouldn't you be doing Christmas Eve things with family and what not?

It pops out about 3/4 - 1 inch. It takes quite a bit of force to get it back in.

Re: Left rear axle popping out of differential

I replaced the axle back in January with a used one because the splines were wrecked and it has been working ever since.
Is the right side different as in no circlip? It has a different part#. Mine is starting to click loudly.

They both have a circlip.
Once you remove the axles, look into the hole with a light, and poke around with a screwdriver to see if a circlip is already in there.

Re: Left rear axle popping out of differential

Is there any difference at all between the left and right? If not than why 2 different part #s?

Yes, they are VERY different.
The right side has two splined sections, and the left side only has one.

Re: Left rear axle popping out of differential

Thanks, I was just confirming what I thought. I've ordered a rebuilt (Cardone) right side rear axle. $77.00 plus $40.00 core. Not bad I think.
