Smoking eng. comp.

New guy here....Just bought a 92 and lots of smoke from under hood...Oil is dripping onto exhaust pipes....I guess it`s from the valve cover gasket...Right side of motor...Pain in the ass to replace gaskets????First Subaru anything, never mind SVX........Steering wheel shakes at 60 to 70 mph....Wheel balance maybe????Puddle of trans. fluid right in front of trans. cross memeber....(dripping off the cross memeber...)I`ve only had the car for a few hours today....$3000.00,120,000 miles...It`s got s bigger or better trans. installed....(different year???).....
I love the way in drives , power is awesome, handles good...I just have to fix a few things...
Thanks for any help, ( i will do a search on some things)

Re: Smoking eng. comp.

Are you sure it's oil dripping on the exhaust. When I bought mine the high pressure power steering hose was leaking onto the right side exhaust and smoking like crazy. The power steering uses Dexron trans fluid and smells different from oil when it burns.
The transmission leak sounds like mine also. They replaced the torque converter under warranty at Aamco before I changed the registration to my name. It would have been very $$$.

Good luck with the new ride.

Sorry, yes it seems to be trans./powersteering fluid....
Sounds like similar issues....
Thanks,
Paul...

Let's hope.. My 92 pearlie used to shake the same way.. It's like driving a vibrating chair... My problem was that I needed new tires, new wheels, new axels(both sides), new inner tie rod ends and an alignment(which I still haven't got due to being broke all the time).. My god pray for balancing issues...

Re: Smoking eng. comp.

I finally got it jacked up high enough for me to wiggle underneath the car.....Looks like alot of the fluid is coming from the steering rack/lines....And some from the front of the trans. pan....The rack is pretty wet with fluid, and steady drippage...
The front end shake is most likley the tires?????They look to be somewhat new, lots of tread....Wheel weights still there....
Looks like some work ahead....OH Well.....
Paul.....

did you test drive the car before you bought it? $3000 is a bit high for a SVX that needs immediate attention. hopefully its the p/s O ring and not something more expensive.

Hello, I did drive it around the block, but I guess it wasn`t long enough to see the smoke....It`s my sons deal from a friend of his and I got caught up in it as the money dude....The guy came over yesterday and is gonna take care of ALL the leaking problems(steering rack, and v/c gaskets),and check hoses....Nice guy....$3000.00 too much, whats the going price for one????Thanks for the reply,
Paul....

$3,000 is not too much, just more than I'd pay for one with leaks, but if he's going to fix them for you, sounds good to me. I got mine for $800 with a dead transmission lol...
