Winter wiper warning

Hello,

I just wanted to let everyone in snowy areas know that if your rear wiper gets stuck due to snow halfway through its cycle, that it will continually apply power to the motor even after the car is off, draining your battery in about 8 hours time, ask me how I know....

Re: Winter wiper warning

I did not know that. Thanks for the post, good to know. I now think I know why my rear wiper never worked when I got the car ages ago. I pulled the motor recently when I started to strip it to become the race car. It smelled bad and burnt.

Re: Winter wiper warning

I noticed something along these lines this morning: Mindlessly blipped the front washers and discovered the wipers frozen in place. Got out to un-stick the wipers and they then proceeded to dutifully make two full sweeps, having been under strain all that time. The car was running; surely juice to the motor would be interrupted with the ignition turned off...?

Re: Winter wiper warning

I would have thought the same thing, but shut your car off halfway through a wiper cycle, they finish the cycle and don't stop in place

Re: Winter wiper warning

I burnt out my rear wiper motor last winter, that's how I found out the hard way about the motor continuing to try to return to its resting place before shutting down. Live and learn.

Re: Winter wiper warning

strange, I would have sworn that if I shut off the car with the front wiper in mid sweep it stops right where it is.

Gonna have to check this out.

Re: Winter wiper warning

Yep--front stops right there when I shut mine off, but have had the rear one stick and keep trying to return with everything off. Actually had keys in my hand, got out and heard this hum from the back---went back and broke rear wiper free, it went to park and hum stopped. Interesting huh??

It is a little easier to notice if the front ones stick.

Usually defrost heat would keep them from sticking.

Don't think so any way because if you turn off the ignition with the front ones running they could stop in any position... obviously no voltage going on there.

Re: Winter wiper warning

Odd, my rear wiper blows the fuse after a few seconds of being stuck.. It's had a 15 Amp fuse in it since I got it, not sure if its correct but I'll take a blown fuse over a smoked motor any day
