92 Fwd?

I know that Subaru auto trannies aren't exactly AWD (90/10 split :|), but wouldn't it switch to 50/50 in the wet? It was raining last night, and I was curious about how it'd launch, being a heavy AWD and all, but it spun the front tires for a few feet. Is this normal? I popped the trunk and checked that FWD fuse thing. No fuse was there, but the thing surrounding it looked weird (maybe oxidized because no fuse was ever in there?).

I dunno, I just want to make sure I'm not running on FWD or something.

Well, you are looking in the wrong place for the fuse. It would be in the fuse box under the hood on the drivers side. I don't know what you were looking at in the trunk.

^That's what I mean, lol. I was doing something else in the trunk (the gasket replacement from an earlier thread).

When I've taken mine out in the rain and punched it it will spin the front tires for a few feet and then you can feel the power to the rear tires "kick in".

^Ok, that's exactly what happened with me. This must be an auto tranny only thing. I never experienced this with my GC.

Re: 92 Fwd?

I have a manual trans out of an 03 WRX. 50/50 all the time. I don't know how much of a difference that makes. Last winter I went out and popped the clutch on snow covered roads, and all 4 wheels spun instantly, before quickly catching up and away I went.

My wife's turbo legacy does the exact same thing, but with hers I somewhat suspect the clutches are worn cuz when I got the car it had 3 different sized tires on it and I have no idea how long he drove it like that...

Funny thing is with the manuals, since it's a viscous coupling, if you get one tire spinning (The only time I ever had it happen was with a tire off the ground), that tire alone will spin until the viscous coupling heats up enough to lock and transfer power to the rear. (No I did not have the car jacked up, I was pulling into my parents' driveway in my old 91 Legacy and got it tweaked just enugh (Driveway goes uphill, off a street that's going downhill) that one front tire came off the ground and started spinning, so I gave it more gas and the coupling locked and the car shot up the driveway.)

Re: 92 Fwd?

I believe what you are describing are worn clutch packs in the diff, as you stated. I'm not 100% sure, but worn diffs on awd cars can make them 1wd or 3wd, assuming you have LSD and not an open diff.

Re: 92 Fwd?

my svx started to go weird an lil bit. i did an drift round an round about at slow speed.... i never had any of my subarus do that before. my auto was playing up tho. normally in the wet it would always stick and i could never lose traction. normally i could go round that round about with no probs.
