Brake fluid cap-master cylinder
When taking off the cap on the master cylinder, what is the correct position of the rubber boot. Is it supposed to be extended, protruding down into the reservoir itself or pushed up. On some cars I've owned, the rubber boots were pressed up against the cap and extended as the fluid level dropped.

It should be folded flush. To eliminate moisture-laden air from coming in contact with the fluid and yet allow the fluid to drop without creating a vacuum the boot was installed.

If it's extended, it'll push down on the fluid level sensor causing the brake warning light to come on.

I have only had my brake light come on in the winter. Pushing up the rubber blatter fixed that problem. However, Beav now points out the reason for the blatter, to reduce the moisture available to the brake fluid surface. Normally the brakes should get flushed every year. With the blatter pushed up it may have to be very 6 months. I think the blatter gets stuffer with age and in the winter it is stiffer because it is colder. I think a new cap sells for around $40. The 91 Legacy I have does not do this and the brake caps look the same.
