Synthetic oil or regular oil and filter questions.

#1... If synthetic oil makes the car leak oil, would switching back to regular motor oil slow the leaking down. Talking about the rear main bearing seal leak.

#2... Has anyone opted to change the oil filter more frequent instead of changing the oil. Maybe every 1000 miles?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Keith

Re: Synthetic oil or regular oil and filter questions.

Has anyone considered just changing the oil filter more frequent and not changing the oil?

I am considering changing the filter every 1000 miles or so miles and see how the oil does.

I notice when changing oil the oil in the filter is always much dirtier than the engine oil on the dipstick.

I use synthetic oil and the porche filter and change them both around 5000 miles

Re: Synthetic oil or regular oil and filter questions.

I was told by a race car driver that you can use Mobile one synthetic every 12000 miles but make sure to change the filter every 3000. I never tried it but it sounds like a good idea.

You can always add a little brake fluid to help swell the rubber on your rear main to slow the leak. (I am asking for it huh) I haven't tried it, and don't think I ever will, but it is just something I have heard a few times over the years.

This is typically ok from what i have read, and consider it to be good advise (unlike the above bit).

I am going to try that but keep a close eye out for the condition of the oil.
I will start off changing the filter more frequent than 3,000 miles and see how it goes. Maybe 1000 miles first... (today) Then 2000 miles next...(Three weeks from today) then get to the 3000 schedule.

*[/SIZE]Has anyone noticed the sharp increase in the price of synthetic?

Don't know how synthetic, not a blend, is made, but maybe it is somehow related to the price of a barrel of oil?

Could maybe the "greed factor"?

Re: Synthetic oil or regular oil and filter questions.

Synthetic is just that--it is synthesized instead of refined. This creates a more uniform product that doesn't have certain molecules in it that you'd rather it not have. The much wanted missingness of these molecules makes it more stable at high temperatures. It also makes it easier to control the oil's viscosity at a wider range of temperatures.

As for cheesy repairs of oil leaks. The bolts on the valve covers bottom out stopping you from getting any more pressure on the gaskets as is. If, however, you wanted to stop them from leaking for a while with an easier job than replacing the gaskets....adding washers between the bolt head and bolt seal would do the job.

You can also replace the intake cam plugs without getting into the timing set. These two things will greatly slow the oil leaking on an eg33 for the lazy man.

I did the valve covers gaskets and cam plug and cam seals but the rear main is leaking a bit.

That is my concern now.

Mike,

Could you explain the access to the cam plugs. From what I have looked at it looks like the cam pulley and back cover come off to get at the cam plug.

Re: Synthetic oil or regular oil and filter questions.

What i would call the cam seals are behind the cam pulleys. What I call the cam plugs are on the intake cams--which don't have pulleys. All you have to do is take off the ends of of the timing covers and you can pop off the old cam plugs grabbing them with a pair of channel locks and then tap in some new ones.

edit--what i call cam plugs are black and they are just that plugs..they don't have a friction surface...they just plug the hole and you wouldn't think they would leak but they do..big time
