5MT vs 4.44 AT
Does a later model WRX 5spd (which I believe is a 3.545) accelerate as hard as a 4.44AT? I've heard the 4.44 puts as much as 20% more torque to the wheels (though I haven't seen that claim substantiated); will the 3.545 5MT do the same?

Do the math and work it out yourself... YOu've got the right idea, now just find out the gear ratios for each transmission so you can figure out max speed in each gear and max torque to the wheels, etc... Then you'll have a rough estimate as to whether or not they are the same...
If I had to guess though I'd think that the 4.44 Auto would be alittle faster than the WRX 5MT... Just my thoughts though.. ~ Chris

Chris,
You've got to toss in the inefficiencies inherent to the AT's design. I'll agree that the AT should be more "consistent" that the MT. You've also got to factor in the fact that the MT is ~75# lighter (I think). -Bill

5mt will get you through the 1/4 faster than any AT unless you get a built one from LAN...

As far as the 1/4 mile is concerned, ask someone who has driven both for their impression. I know I have not read of any autotrannys being quicker or faster than a 5MT in the 1/4 mile, on this site.

Tim, you're soon to be 5spd . . . what are you doing with your 4.44s?
If you are doing the swap, you should lay down a few runs in the 1/4 with the 4.44 and then with the 5spd so we can see the difference. Wait, has someone done that already? <runstothesearchfeature>

The WRX 5MT is actually a 3.9 to 1 axle ratio. Although the rear differential is the same, the drive shaft to the rear is a 1.1 to 1 underdrive. The front differential is 3.9 to 1.
