With speed. Rpms don't seem to affect it. Ticking and PaPaPa sound (knocking) speed up and slow down with me.

And by too long, what time frame are we talking? Days? week? weeks? I noticed the ticking first, about a week or so ago. Then we noticed the second sound (knocking) a few days later.

Well, if I were a betting man, I'd say you have 2 weeks on the outside.

Get that thing fixed, stat.

Front diff is probobly shot.... In this case, I would not suggest the mechanic that did the diagnosis fix the car. If he is that unfamiliar with the transmission assembly then I would hate to see him try and put it all back together, no less do it right

I'll take it in to the tranny shop this morning and see what they say. I'm off in an hour to get the Sprint fitted with new tires so I have something to get to work in. Its sooo windy here this morning I may get blown off the road in it...after the SVX it feels so light and small and, well, just not the SVX!

Thanks again.

Quick update

Got 5 minutes between magazine deliveries (my husband is the owner/publisher, so the family and friends get roped in occasionally!) and thought I'd post this fast.

Took her in to a tranny shop recommended by another mechanic this morning. And like a drunk in a bar room brawl, she spit out her teeth...
Front diff is toast.

You guys are so knowledgeable when it comes to these beauties.

Talk to ya tonight. I have a few more questions.

Cynthia

Good to hear it Cynthia.

That's a cheaper fix.

Now, just take this post, print it, and show it to your erstwhile mechanic.

Then hand him the toasted differential as a parting gift.

Well I know you would be tempted to doubt his motives, but Cyn has had good service from him in the past.

Like somebody said earlier, all round mechanics often know squat about autos, and don't bother to learn because there are specialised shops for that.

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, but let him know his diagnosis was well off the mark.

Joe

Long time ago when I was doing mobile repair I ran into a car that I couldn't figure out with my tote bag of tools. I spent 1-2 hours testing what I could and finally had to give up and refer the guy to a shop. I was pissed that I couldn't find the answer for him so I just charged him .5 hours for mine and his time. I was really happy when he called a few days later to tell me that the shop found his ecu was bad and asked if I would replace it for him. I wasn't as happy that he called me back to ask me to do the simple job, but more so that he found out what the issue was and told me about it. So I bet your mechanic would like to hear what the problem was/is because it will increase his knowledge and allow him to better diagnose this problem in the future if he encounters it again.

They have been good with the car before, so I won't be too hard on them. For all I know, they could be lurking this thread...as I've taken in print outs from here before, so they know where I get my info-and such great info, too!

A couple of questions.

1. The tranny shop figures well over 5 hours for the labour to take out the tranny and repair the diff. Good estimate, or are they off on time?

2. Where to get the diff - salvage yard, can you buy it new, suggestions please.

3. If they have to take out the whole transmission anyway, am I crazy to just change the front diff? is there anything else I should look at doing at the same time (cost effectiveness). I seems some owners do the whole tranny at this point...just want to make the right choice in the long run. Short term, I want the car back, running fine for not a huge amount. But somethings should be measured in the long term, as the short term solution isn't necessarily the best solution. I've been mulling all this over as I drove the Sprint around all day.

4. I'm sure I'll have a question here soon!

You need one diff, why not do two! 4.44 is what I am thinking here, or a 4.11. (you need a front and just get the rear while you are at it)
5 hours isn't too crazy as I was quoted that around here when I was seeing how much me being lazy would cost. $600 to have a tranny shop swap in front and rear diffs if you don't know how, or like me are too lazy and medically challenged to do it your self. I don't know if you can get a diff new, but I have heard that it is cheap used, so good luck.

I'll second the 4.44s.

While the transmission is out of the car, adjust the brakeband, maybe a rear main seal while your at it?
