power mirror adjustment switch

I am curious if the power mirror adjustment switch is suppose to light up

The mirror switch DOES illuminate. The four little white arrows on the black cicular disc light up a soft green when the kights are on.

The word MIRROR and the L/R letters over the sliding switch do not illuminate.
Members have tried to take them apart and replace the bulb, but it is a tricky process. Much easier to get a new one from subaruparts.

They have been illuminated in my 2 pearlies and my 1996 Polo since I have had them.

mohrds disassembled the mirror switch and replaced the bulb. Here are the instructions from his post:

"I took out and apart the mirror switch. There is a replaceable bulb inside, but in a different socket than other indicator lights.

Here's the way I did it.

I took three small flat pocket screwdrivers (the kind they give away at various shows and such) and slid one under each grey
(or beige) tab on one side of the assembly. Then I gently held the assembly in one hand and gripped the black connector with
the other and rocked the connector away from the screwdrivers. That released one side without damage, then I took one
screwdriver and released the three remaining tabs one at a time.

When you remove the connector assembly (the black part) have the face (with buttons) down to avoid losing parts all over the place.

Look at the inside of the black assembly and you will see the illuminator resting in a red rubber sleeve. Grab the bulb assembly by
the green skin and slide the rubber socket out. remove the bulb by unwrapping the leads and then remove the green condom.

I'm going to walk over to Radio Shack this morning after they open and see which bulb fits.

Assembly is reverse of disassembly."

Thanks for the info and the great pics.

I am a slow learner and I am still unclear how to remove the bulb. Looking at the close-up picture of the bulb, what pulls free from the assembly? Is it the glass bulb body with the green condom coming free of the red or ochre part underneath, or does the red/ochre part including the glass bulb slide up off the two copper pins?

Does anyone know?

I think the bulb and socket come off as one unit. Mohrds said:

In the other thread, Earthworm says just about the same thing:

That bulb/red rubber socket just pulls straight off. Once off you will see how the bulb wires are wound around the rubber socket. When I replaced this bulb I pulled on the wire a little too hard and almost sliced the wire right through the socket. Use your best judgement with the tension of the wires and realize that it doesn't really need to be completely tight.

If yours is not working, you lose nothing by not trying this anyway.

Got it. I see the story now. The bulb part has two wires, which wrap around and into the unusual socket.

You buy a replacement bulb, and you thread the wires into the red rubber part to replicate the Subaru bulb.

Since we are on the topic of switch illumination, here is my post on what is, and is not supposed to light up.

Here is what SHOULD have illumination when your lights are on.

Besides the general illumination of the instrument panel, gear selector and climate controls, here is a list of the switches/ buttons that should be illuminated:

Overhead switches
The wording in the row of four buttons that say SPOT DOOR ROOM SPOT should illuminate green.
The sunroof open and close switches (arrows) are not illuminated.

Dash buttons
The words on the CRUISE and SECURITY buttons and the FOGLIGHT symbol, on the left side of the steering column should illuminate green. The CRUISE and FOGLIGHT buttons have amber LEDs that illuminate when activated. The SECURITY button has a red LED that flashes all the time, unless the security system is turned off or the ignition is turned on

The symbol on the REAR DEFROST button on the right side of the steering column, should illuminate green. An amber LED confirms when it is activitated.
The red triangle on the HAZARD button should illuminate red. It does not flash when operating

Lower dash (left side)
The symbols in the HEATED OUTSIDE MIRROR switch and the PARKING LIGHT button next to it, should illuminate green. The heated mirror switch has an amber LED to show that it is turned on. The parking light switch has no amber LED indicator on the 1992 cars. (On my 96, there is an amber LED in this switch to show when it is on, the 92 does not have this LED)

The MIRROR control button has no illumination for the word "MIRROR" or the L/R switch. However the four directional arrows that are on the round black disk should illuminate green.

The only button left is the small green LED in the AUTO button in the driver's side window power switch cluster. The word AUTO, like on the mirror switch does not illuminate. No other window buttons have illumination.

On later models, the door lock button on the center console should be illuminated.

I didn't know the mirror thing lit up - the one on my Legacy didn't - at least I don't think it did.

Anybody wanna mail me one of those little green cap things to make the light green? One of mine was stuck to the old bulb...

As I recall, it's 272-1092. That may not be the exact part number, but it's extremely close. It's a 12v bulb with long wires. It looks just like the original but with really long wires. They come in packs of 2 and cost about $1.50 per pack.

::EDIT:: Confirmed. They don't come with the little green cover though. You'll have to try to salvage the ones from your old bulbs. Sometimes they get stuck on though (one of mine did so now I have a white backlit heated mirrors button )
