Joe,

Thanks for your explanation. The issues of the various reds have always been a point of confusion to me. I have heard so many different names and nicknames for these colors over the years.

Let me get this straight:

265 Crimson Mica is Claret (in Japan)
247 Ruby Mica/Swiss Ruby Mica is Red Mica (in Japan) Also available in Switzerland?
372 Barcelona Red could be Bright Red (in Germany)
487 Crimson Mica could be Bordeaux Pearl (in the UK) or Bordeaux Red Mica
559 Brilliant Red could be Bright Red (in the UK)

We need a spreadsheet for just the various reds, their codes and markets
How to input this onto the existing spreadsheet without a lot of confusion and cross-referencing is challenging.

Look at this revised spreadsheet. Do I have it right?

You are correct so far as I know.
With the exception of the code you list,225 for the first one, a typo I'm sure, it should read 265.

It is my guess that the Ruby Mica pearl red variant was available in Germany up to maybe '94. But I don't know.

We once had a guy from Switzerland who used to post here, and had contacts in the German club. I will bet if we sent him your new revised chart, he could fill in plenty of info on the Europe continental colours.

My '93 German catalogue lists the following;

#267 White Mica
#947 Ruby Red Mica
#265 Dark Red Mica
#222 Dark Grey

Also my JDM Subaru list shows #559 as Bright Red 2 but not used on the JDM SVX.

Is Bright Red 3 an SVX Color? What's with the letter suffix? They surely didn't run out of numbers. How close is 22G to EG33?

Bright Red 3 was not an SVX colour. Not sure why they used a letter suffix although it is quite common on Subaru's JDM colour codes.

On a related topic, now that we have more than a few color codes, just how many interior colors were there? Dark gray, black, and beige come to mind as the only ones.

That's another whole spreadsheet in itself, since colors and materials were dependent on both the exterior color and the trim levels.

Speaking of models, in addition to the L, LS, LS-L, and LSi (US) how many other models are we speaking of? There was an L, an E and LE. Throw in the S4, S3, S40II and the S40.

This is a topic for another thread. The color codes are enough to deal with at present.

the letter sufix would represent a color package option, being a body repair tech i can honestly say that this is what it mean, i know with other subis such as the outbacks the letter suffix at the end indicates either an undertone for the two tone or a time color option. my thoughts would be mirror color or something that was offered on certain models, i recall seeing two red SVX's in Japan that one had red mirrors and the other had black. i can say the same for the silver tone packages, i remember seeing one with the lighter silver mirrors and one with the darker to match the bottom. i have these pics on my old HD on my old comp, i will see if the HD is any good and if i can recover them. but that is my thought on the lettering

Thanks paddles.

I took the trouble to PM a couple of guys in Switzerland, see if they had info on the colours.

Meantime, I browsed through the Swiss SVX website, and the German one.

There are a good few pictures that answered at least some of the unknowns;

1) Was graphite grey offered in Germany? Yes it was, there are one or two cars in the photos, and Paul has the 222 code above for '93.

2) Was Bright Yellow offered? For sure, for sure. One meet had 3 of them.

3) Did Germany get Polo Green/Bright Green Mica? Plenty of them.

4) Which bright reds were available? The most common light reds on show are the Barcelona with black roof, and the Ruby Mica with black roof.

5) Did Germany get Teal/Peacock or Emerald Green? Hard to say from photos. In the '97-'98 shots, there is one very dark green car. Looks green all over. So it is either an Emerald Green or a Polo shot too dark.

6) Did Germany get Laguna/Bright Blue? None at any of the meets.

7) Most unexpected? Not many Clarets, and only ONE Silver and Black at meetings. The silver was tarted up.

Joe

Hello all!

As Joe anticipated (PM'd you) the color of my SVX is Bright Yellow and color code is 518.
It was bought in Germany and it is a late July 1996 sold model.
ID plate picture finally in my locker.

In the meantime I tried to get more info to add to this thread and found so far two documents which may help.

One is a 93 German catalogue downloaded from the German Subaru website (checked and they're not available anymore ).
This one has 5 color names and codes on the lower right corner of page 3 of the pdf document.
Color codes in there are two digit but it looks like they stand for the last two of the standard three digit Subaru color code.
Oddly these colors do not match the same posted before by paddlesnz which were also taken from a 93 Deutsche catalogue but maybe there were a few different ones distributed...

The second doc is a page from a set of scanned pages (not by me) from a so called "European catalogue".
I don't remember from where I took it but I uploaded a double page which shows on the right side six color rectangles and below each one the color name and code.
Unfortunately the resolution is not so good but with the right zooming and a good screen I believe all the related info can be retrieved and confirmed.
At least I managed to confirm the Bright Yellow color code before I confirmed it later on the ID plate of my car so...
Also maybe somebody else has this catalogue in a better resolution or even in print and can upload in his locker a nice set of high resolution scans for our records?

Anyway this is all I can contribute as of now.

I'll keep peeking in and looking as much as I can into my dispersed files.
I'll keep bringing what I may find.

Cheers!!

Paulo

Thanks for this Paul.

What you list here makes sense from a Japanese perspective.

The JDM market did not get either of the known solid [i.e. non-metallic] reds. The Barcelona Red in their eyes would be Bright Red 1.

For 94-95, there was a change to #559, also solid, and in most or all markets, this solid red would have been an "all-over" colour like Bordeaux or Bright Yellow. So in the Japanese chart of SVX colours, this new red known as Bright Red in Some markets and Brilliant Red in the US, this now becomes Bright Red 2.

It is also noteworthy that while the rest of the world from 92-95 were still shifting SVXs with the black roof and trunk, only in the US did the Bright Red 1, or Barcelona Red, get offered as a single tone all-over colour, with no black roof and trunk. Presumably this could have been because it was the "Anniversary" model.

It's like as if they were testing the market to see if the single colour cars would be as acceptable or as well fancied as the original ones with black roof and trunk.

Just as an aside, my own favourite from the later model one-colour cars is the Light Silver metallic which the US did not get. They look good from all angles, plus they sharpen up a lot from different rims, not that I have much against the original rims.

Joe

Thanks Paulo

You may have got the European catalogue [read English] from James' site. I found the codes hard to read on it too.

We had already confirmed the Yellow as #518. You should download the latest version of the spreadsheet from John. It is starting to get coherent.

If our German speaking members respond, we may be able to get scans from them of the colour charts offered in the region. I could be wrong in this assumption, from a marketing standpoint it may have made sense to offer the same vehicle choice in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, they are all German speaking countries and LHD.
