scratch damaged on glass

can some one explain why the side glass's these cars get scratched in an very unusual, controlled way?, i had the same prob on my previous car , but i thought it was just a 'one-off', but the latest one has also devloped these controlled markings, very weird?

thanks to all who replied to my previous request for tuning options, looks like i have to keep saving for my next choice, Honda NSX or Jaguar XJR (aluminuim version) long time!!

There are some felt pads inside the door pannel and when they get sand on them they will scratch the glass as the window goes up and down. If you clean them, it will help keep that from happening. Good luck.

Earl is 100% right here Ahmed.

You need to take off the door panel to see it. it's easy enough to do, but don't force it more than you have to or you will break the embedded plastic pop-on clips.

There will be a runner or guide on the inside in line with that scratched line in the glass. The part that pushes the glass into place has a felt or velour pad up against the glass. This pad gets grit embedded in it. When it does, this grit abrades the glass each time it goes up and down, hence the scoring.

As it is on the inside of the window, my guess is that dust and sand gets down there when driving with the window open in the summer months. The outside of the window pane is "cleaned" by the rubber strip it is pushed up to, so I suspect little or no sand gets to that side. Most of the scoring damage will be to the inside of the glass.

A car that has been driven a lot with all four windows open will have scoring on all four opening panes. A car where the driver prefers aircon and windows closed will have very little damage to the other 3 windows. The driver's window is nearly always marked, it is just a question of how bad the scoring will be.

glass polish

One little company I have come across is Frost.co.uk they have some excellent renovation products, of which I have tried a few....and they do work.
Amongst them is their glass polishing kit, it does work, although only on light sratches, but it did improve the overall look on my svx. This combined with Joe's advise will give your car a fresh look at a very cheap price....nowt like elbow grease!!

Hey John

How's it going? Thought you had left the country, or them canny Scots had wised up to you.

Keeping well?

Joe

still here!

Hi Joe,

Still up here with the canny Scots and no intention to leave till I've drank them dry of their finest malt, so be a few more months yet

As far as keeping well?!...I think nine months of D.I.Y are starting to take there toll...but if it keeps her in doors happy then I'll get time to play.
The 'bus' contrary to being a 4x4 is now in its winter state...wrapped up till spring in the garage..but had a great year runing it apart from a leak from the PS system which I will leave for the garage to sort next year as it's due for the 90k service....ouch, ouch and tripple ouch.

No intention to giving up the SVX habbit, but i promised myself a new bike (with engine) when I'd given my dearest her new kitchen...but the SVX has only been of the road a month and boredom as set in already, so the VFR might have to do another year..

Anyway enough about me, how's yerself, is the force still with you?

all the best

John

Hi John

Good to hear from you.

I hope Ahmed does not mind us hijacking his thread a little. Ahmed, John's advice is worth following; his graphite metallic SVX is one of the best kept and presented in the UK. He knows how to clean up these problems!

Don't drink all that single malt!!! We are hoping to tour Scotland for a few days next summer on the bikes. It would be bad news if the place was all dried up!

I still did not manage to get my new gearbox installed, so Betty is still off-road. Best of luck with the kitchen. I have to bribe my missus too. In our house it's a new fireplace, chimney breast and log-burning stove.

Man's gotta do......

Joe

Re: scratch damaged on glass

I am bumping up this thread as I was unable to find the part numbers in any of the multiple threads on this issue for new guides to prevent further scratching. I also had looked on subaruparts.com's catalogs and was also unable to find anything there. Anyone able to help me out? Also have people found anything better to use over the years to remove the existing scratches?

-Thanks, Nate

Edit: Leave it to me to bump up one of the threads not in the tech or general forums

Nate

I have these numbers in a folder somewhere on my PC. I'll dig them out and post back later.

Hi Nate,

Try this company, www.frost.co.uk item no. S130, I'm sure they will do overseas, it's where I got the kit from to polish the glass on my SVX, it wont remove deep scratches, only the light ones, but it does disguise them and are not as noticable....... but whats the alternative

Hi John, how's it going with you? I'll be in touch directly this week to catch up on your news. I've just started a new job and I'm busy on induction training.

Nate, here are the numbers for you:

They are called stabilizers by Subaru The outer ones are the same for all four windows. The inner stabilizers are different depending left or right. You need an inner and an outer for each opening window. Same part numbers for the front and rear windows.

Outer Stabilizer Part # 62310PA000
Inner Stabilizer RHS # 62320PA000
Inner Stabilizer LHS # 62320PA010

OK with that?

Joe

Re: scratch damaged on glass

Napa has some stuff called "Happy Glass" that is supposed to remove pits and scratches from the windshield. Its silica based so it should make a difference overall in the appearance, just takes a lot of rubbin'.

Re: scratch damaged on glass

Just want to let those people who may be wanting to do this in the future, the old inner stabilizers can simply be popped out and the new ones (technically outer) just popped in. So if you want all new ones for your front windows, you only need to order 8 of these
Outer Stabilizer Part # 62310PA000
and none of the inner stabilizers... I can add pics when I get to it to show what I'm talking about

It will save you about $15 if ordering from one of the online dealers if I remember correctly.
