Fans run all of the time??

My cooling fans come on when I start the car and run all of the time. Is this normal. In my other Subarus (and Hondas, Nissans, etc.) the fans didn't come on until the engine heated up.

Do the fans run when turn OFF the climate control?

How's your engine temperature sensor? That is a symptom of this dying/dead sensor.

Re: fans run all of the time

BOTH fans come on the minute I turn the ignition switch whether the climate control (and/or A/C) is on or not. I recently replaced the temp sensor to cure a hard start condition.

Try the process for clearing engine codes.

You might want to double check the wiring and the temp sensor itself. I think that's a failsafe when the ECU can't read the sensor.

My both svxes' fans won't run after I start, if the Auto Climate is off.
If the Auto Climate turns on, fans will run, if they run(most of the times
I observed), they run together.

If it's on AC, when it gets cold enough, the fans will stop for few mins.
If the engine gets hot, the fans will usually keep running or get faster
and louder if the weather gets real hot. That's my observations.

Anyone knows if the fans have variable spd? Such as Lo, Med, Hi? I just
think it shld have at least two spd, sometimes it runs fast sometimes it
runs slow....

I asked the local subaru service dept once I bought some parts. They
said both fans ran individually, it didn't make sense to me, and not similar
to the system like some hondas, toyotas...

The FSM states that the fans have 4 settings: off, low, med, high.

I've never seen only 1 fan running.

Fan Follow-up

I disconnected the battery overnight to clear the ECU codes and still both fans come on when I turn the key. I'm wondering if the fans quit working when the temp sensor (which I replaced) went out and the previous owner just hot-wired them to be ON all of the time rather than just fixing the temp sensor. I've noticed the fans change speed on my other (dead now) SVX, but these fans seem to be on "high" constantly. Guess I'll inspect the wiring next.

Try the blue wire method. It should take 5 minutes or less.

Wonderful. Finally, someone can answer this question to me. It makes sense to me now with my observations. SVX is a high-tech car, it shld have variable spd on the fans.

Me too. I have never seen or felt only 1 fan running. I think the subaru service dept locally told me the wrong thing.

You may have never seen it, but it does happen under normal circumstances, especially in cold weather. When the climate control is off, only one of the fans will run if the engine is cool or warm. When the engine gets hotter, both fans will run. When the climate control is on, one of the fans is always running.

You've seen it? I've played with the climate controls and have never seen just one fan operating.

I'm (almost) positive this is not the case with mine. I never turn-off the climate control, and at idle with a cool engine on a hot day, neither of the fans run until she warms-up, then both kick-on at once.

This is getting confusing...
