Also another question: are oil caps and radiator caps universal for all Subarus?

I have wondered if the magnetic oil drain plugs are useful or not. I think that if there are big pieces of metal floating around, it would pick them up and you would know it when you changed your oil. But, on the other hand, if you found much on it, then it may be too late anyway. Maybe someone else will coment on it.

It sure couldn't hurt, they will (should) pick up small bits of metal as well as large and depending on the source of the shavings, could intercept a problem before it gets truly serious. We have "chip dectors" on the Helicopter, they are magnets and pick up small (and I mean really small) shavings of metal.

No. Although you may be able to swap oil and radiator caps back and forth between most models without doing any harm.

Didn't think so. I was wondering whether to trust those guys selling those pretty STi oil caps.

I was looking again at the oil plugs, one has a very small magnet, the other a longer one, and I was thinking the oil pan is very big in comparison. What are the chances either would work given the small area they cover?

I'm still honda lovin so I can say that Ive seen those usuaaly about an inch long and always have a little something on them even with 3k oil changes

mine had 228k when the motor finally went out for good most of the others were well over 100k a couple under but always looked about the same

Same as the oil plug unless your talking about the internal one and thats usually a bar or doughtnut stuck to the pan or at least very low

Automatic transmissions has a magnet in the oil pan. It is located right beneath the intake for the oil pump. It is about 2" outside diameter and 5/8" inside diameter.
I usually drop the pan and clean the magnet off every 30k miles. It is always coverd with about 1/8" thick of metal fur, metal from the transmission clutch plates.
If there is a filter on cooling line from the 4EAT it only filters a portion of the oil that goes thru the 4EAT. Most of the AFT goes straight form the sump to the guts of the tranny. That is why there is a magnet located in pump suction and why the suction has a fine mesh screen strainer. All of the AFT flow passes the fine screen strainer in the sump.

I think a magnet in the engine oil sump is a good idea. The about of metal fur found on the magnet at each oil change can be used to judge if the engine cast iron cylinder liners and cast iron rings are wearing out. This can only be judges after several oil changes to see if the amount is constant changes. It will most likely have more metal on it if the SVX is driven harder and longer than if driven nicely.

I agree about using it to gauge long term wear. Seems like a good idea. If the tranny has a similar item this should be a no-brainer.
