Squealing
I have a squealing sound coming from the passenger front of my car. The car has a steering wheel shudder and vibration at speeds.
First I thought it was from the bad ball joint, so I changed that. Nope. Then I thought it might be brakes, but the sound is present whether or not the pedal is depressed. My next thought is cv joint. I really can't imagine what else it might be. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

My $0.02. It could possibly be:
1) a loose belt 2) a brake caliper that has seized and is permanently rubbing against the rotor 3) your imagination!

Pretty sure its not a caliper, not rubbing all the time. Just an intermittent squeal. I know its not a belt, only while moving. Not steering related. I am going to do the cv axle tomorrow, hopefully that fixes my problem.

Question: does the squealing only happen when you have the A/C on?
You said it came from the front of the car on the passenger side - which is where the A/C compressor and its drive belt are located. My wife's old 240SX had a loose A/C belt and it would squeal at times when you stepped on the gas. Just a thought... -Chike

Pretty sure it is the cv though. I've had a couple of people ride in the car this weekend and we all came to the same conclusion. Now I just need to order some parts so I can do it next weekend.

I had a high pitched squeel comming from my tires. Turned out it was a defective brake pad. (They were only about a month old) They looked fine, but as soon as I swapped in the old brake pads the noise instantly went away. Might want to try that?
PS the squeel was always on, not just when the brakes were pressed.. |

If I still have the squeal after that, I'll take a look at the brakes. Thanks.

Well, replaced the cv this weekend with one from Raxles. All I can say is WOW! It is amazing how well the car drives now. It actually fixed some problems I was having that I thought completely unrelated.
The install was fairly simple. I would've been done in less than a 1/2 hour, but the GD pin wouldn't fit in. That took me quite a while to convince it to go in place. I am very happy with the result, it was well worth it. I paid a bit extra for the Raxles part, but it was very high quality. I was very impressed.

I was having vibrations anytime I turned left, more noticeable at highway speeds. The right side joint was bad. The biggest flag for a bad CV is clunking coming from that area when you put it into gear or accelerate from a stand-still. You can also check them by making slow, tight circles in a parking lot. You will hear clicking/clunking from the side opposite the turn if it is bad.
I found why it was squealing too. When I went to take the axle nut off, it was HAND TIGHT!!!! I was lucky that there was no bearing damage. Doubt you will have that problem though. I have a feeling it was due to bad service.
