Big 5 speed problem. No Speed Sensor?

I was just called by the shop doing my conversion. The transmission I got apperently doesnt have an electronic Speed Sensor. (1996 Impreza) Is this possible? What can I do at this point? If I buy another transmission I fear I wont have enough money to bail my car out of the shop.

How can it not have a speed sensor? Something needs to tell the speedo where to be.

It uses an analog signal through the use of a cable. I learned (thanks huck!) that it's possible to convert it to a digital output by bolting the svx vss onto the manual box.

So the SVX uses a digital speed sensor signal, but some other trannies used an analog signal? Weird. I mean, I would expect the digital signal to be more accurate, but it's odd to me that they used both for awhile.

Sorry, a more accurate term would have been that the impreza tranny uses a 'mechanical' signal.

Ah - I get it. Since the AWD setup in your Impreza donor wasn't an electronic VTD setup (like the SVX), it doesn't need a digital signal from the tranny. So you can retrofit the electronic sensor from your original 4EAT into the 5MT?

Here is what was attached to the MT:

This shows the SVX Digial VSS mounted in place of the cable on the MT:

It was a direct bolt on. It took me about a minute to do this afternoon.

In the SVX it takes the speed signal from the tranny and uses it to control the speedo, the ECM input, and the TCU input. When you convert it to a 5speed you still need the signal for the speedo and the ECM but the TCU is not used anymore. On the earlier Imprezzas and Legacys they used a regular speedo cable to operate the speedo and the speed sensor was built in to the speedo in the dash. Thankfully when Subaru made the speed sensor for the SVX they just made it screw rite in to the regular cable hole. Thank you Subaru.

And no Huck, not that kind of speedo

I'll apologize to Huck, also. I hate to see him insulted like that (confusing him with me, not mentioning the speedo).

Well, it must be that we're both from Kentucky, that caused the confusion.
