Replacing both rear quarter panel...

Hi!

Both of my rear quarter panel are very rusty and also the front passenger fender. I'm planning for a new paint this summer.

I want to know if I must absolutely replace the rear quarter? It's about 20hrs per quarter panel!

If I must replace the quarter panel, can I take it from a part car? Can I take a front fender from a part car?

Thanks for your suggestions and advice.

Francis

I thought the rear quarter panels were part of the uni-body?

They are, and that's what makes it so expensive to remove and install one.

Francis, I've had the same question myself for some time. One of my quarter panels has a little bubble of rust from accident damage (previous owner). The body shouldn't rust, but the damage and repair compromised the zinc plating.

I don't know whether or not you can get a quarter panel from a parts car. I think the way the panel is welded into the car prevents this from being practical.

www.subaruparts.com can get the panels and they're pretty reasonable. If you're looking at replacing both (that's a huge labor expense), you might s well get new panels. Trying to remove them from a parts car would likely be way more trouble than it's worth.

The only question I have concerning a new quarter panel is the bend around the back of the car, underneath the taillights. It's not all one piece - there's a hand-brazed, hand polished joint under there.

I hope I helped you, instead of freaking you out more. As I said, I'd like to have the same panel on my car replaced. Just repairing the rust means it'll come back in a couple years anyway.

Whatever you decide to do, please keep us up-to-date.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not freaking out, not yet

I will look for the joint underneath the taillights.

If I replace the two rear quarter panel, can I expect less than 42h of time?

Does it really take 21h to replace a quarter panel? Does it include the paint time or only the removal/installation?

Thanks!

Francis

You can't see it. Here, look at this site and click on the image for page 52. You can see a guy hand-grinding what will be a painted, external surface between the taillights and rear bumper cover. That's the seam I'm talking about, and I don't know if the new quarter panels come with that work done, or if a body show has to do it themselves. That may be why so much labor is required to do it.

I don't know, but I think it's quite possible.

There's the quarter panel. Not only is it spot-welded all the way around - it's likely that a lot of stuff has to be disassembled before you can even get to all the welds.

Thank you, Mike - that's exactly what I wanted to know. So, in the above link from subaruparts.com, items 14/15 and 16/17 are structure underneath the quarter panel?
