How sweet it was (another trans issue)

OK so back in November the trans went in my 92. Last month I got it replaced with a SOA Remanufactured unit.

For a few weeks everything was so good
It shifted beutifully.
I replaced the drivers window motor/regulator.
I replaced the cracked rim.
I was really able to enjoy driving the car and notice the ever loudening wheel bearing noise

Now, it no longer shifts into 4th at all, and I lost the engine braking in 3rd. I did some searching and the engine breaking seems to be a resistor issue. What about the loss of 4th??

I'll be taking it back to the shop tomorrow. Any thoughts on what's going on??

Brake band?

Dave,

If the brake band had come loose or lost its grip, the car would stay in 3. You might expect not to have second gear either, so if you check and find you have no second gear [revs pull it straight into third] then very likely the brake band is worn, and the tranny has to come out. It could be driving in "limp home" mode at present.

For the loss of engine braking in 3, troubleshooter suggests faulty TCU, valve sticking [one of the solenoids in the pan area] or faulty TPS, along with band slippage mentioned above.

Strangely enough, the first two of these are listed for loss of 3-4 shift also, plus the possibility of a faulty ATF temp sensor. These three can be checked on-car without removing the tranny.

I hope it's one of the sensors or a sticking solenoid for cost and inconvenience reasons. I fear it is the brake band though. It could not have gone in a month, unless the band was too loose in the reman when installed, which would be their fault. If it is the band, insist they fix it at their cost. You haven't been drag racing it, now have you??

Best of luck with the fix

Joe

Thanks for the reply,
All of the other shifting is smooth as silk.
1-2-3 is perfect, so i have a feeling you may have the right call with a sticking valve or TCU.

And, believe it or not, I haven't been drag racing it.
I have had it up to some decent highway speeds, but haven't been hammering it to get it to those speeds.

It does have the SOA warranty, so any problem with the trans itself is just a major inconvenience.

Sounds like another poor SOA rebuild. When I was working for the dealer, this seemed to be happening more and more frequently. Bad Reman's out of the box... sigh.
