Does the radiator need to come out for a Timing Belt replacement?

Hello all,

I just completed the valve cover gaskets (I found it to be quite easy, just time consuming) and I am planning to spend tomorrow working on the timing belt/cam seals/oil pump seals/water pump/etc.

I have a very basic question... Does the radiator need to come out make room for working on the front of the engine? Thanks.

Clarke

Yes, you will want to take it out so that you have more room.

I simply just take out the cooling fans... The radiator is not really a bother for me.

I hate to sound stupid, but does the upper radiator hose need to be removed?

To remove the rad? Might as well. You could leave it attached on the motor end, but it's an extra five seconds to remove it completely and it'll give you more room to work on the belt.

I don't remove the radiator to do a SVX Timing elt, unless I'm doing a water pump at the same time

I'm sorry, I meant if I don't remove the radiator, does the upper hose still need to be removed (and therefore the coolant) to get to the timing belt.

I think the answer is that I need to drain the radiator, and remove it since I was planning on replacing the water pump.

Thanks.

Re: Does the radiator need to come out for a Timing Belt replacement?

I ended up draining the radiator and pulling it. MUCH easier and it gives me a good reason to replace the coolant. Is there any specific coolant that I should be using, or will any decent name brand coolant from the auto parts store work? Thanks!
