Re: new SVX owner has questions

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you are hearing from Volvo mechanics. Mine doesn't even have a dipstick to check it. Definately change it if it looks at all dirty. When changing drain, do not flush.

Nobody mentioned one issue, so I'm going to because it is important. The transmissions tend to fail because of heat spike issues. With that in mind we always recommend to new owners to ensure their transmission gets an external transmission fluid cooler. You should do this, it is a cheap insurance policy against future melt-down. Do a search on 'transmission cooler' and you will pull up loads of info and advice. The B&M Supercooler
19000 lbs GVW slots right in between the two rads and will cool your oil in the hottest summer conditions, plus allow rapid heat up in winter. Pick of the bunch.

I looked today to see if maybe one was aready installed, nothing between the rad & condenser. So its now 1st on my list of things to buy.

Radad, good call. In fact, correct call. You are attending to the thing that has the highest potential cost and is also the commonest failure.

Memphis, anybody telling you not to change the transmission oil is talking through their anterior funnel. It's cheaper to change the oil, new oil handles the heat better.

Get a Suby advisor man,

Joe

Are you sure they're not saying never FLUSH the transmission? Big difference between a flush (a needless expense in my view and potentially damaging according to some) and a simple fluid change. I can't imagine any rationale that would justify not changing ALL automotive fluids periodically.

Re: new SVX owner has questions

Regarding changing your tansmission fluid: Changing your tranny fluid can cause problems if you get it blown through the system. by doing this it blows the crap through where it can clog up the filters and or the system. The better way to change your transmission fluid is to let it drain by itself. Don't let them use the machine that blows it all out. When you drain it, have them change your filter as well (You have to drop the pan and buy a tranny filter kit.). Drive it for a few weeks and drain it again (same way) don't have to replace filter. Drive it a month or two and drain it again. The reason for doing it this way is because when you drain it this way, you do not get all the ATF drained so it takes a few changes to really clean the AT fluid. Then, if it's binding, I would add a small bottle of limited slip differential to keep the clutch pack from sticking and ensure there is no binding.
