Engine pinging (pinking)

Hi, My engine seems to get pre-ignition pinging during medium to hard acceleration. I am using premium fuel, and it has only happened since I replaced a defective #1 Crank Angle Sensor. Any ideas anyone?

Re: Engine pinging (pinking)

Do you hear pinging? Pinging is clearly audible in an svx. You don't think you have it you know you have it. It's also something you pretty much never hear on a stock svx. You have to both be running lean and have bad knock sensors that the ecu is ignoring and then MAYBE you can have pinging.

A lot of people here have bad knock sensors but it results in a slow car and poor fuel economy not pinging.

Re: Engine pinging (pinking)

if you actually have pinging I'd guess you either have a bad maf meter or your snorkus on wrong.

hope that helps

Somewhat off topic but can you describe what the pining sounds like? and how audible is it?

I had an old Legacy that knocked under load unless I used premium fuel. Imagine the sound of marbles rattling around inside each cylinder.

Re: Engine pinging (pinking)

Hi Guys, Thanks for your suggestions. I have just checked the fault codes, and am getting a #11 (Crank angle sensor or circuit) and #31 (Throttle position sensor or circuit). I've just replaced the crank sensor - because car wouldnt start, and had no codes after. Can anyone make sense of this?
I would describe the noise as a high pitched rattling, in fact like what they call it in the UK, pinking.

Check the big bolt on the front of the crankshaft pulley, make sure it is tight.

Harvey.
